Seriously, Henry is a great guy - it was a ton of fun to hang out, demo some gear, and swap gear.

I look forward to my visit up Kansas way, in the not so distant future.

Cave rig, Polk SDA SRS 2, Golden Tube Audio SEP-1 Line Stage, Carver TFM 45 amp (375/ch), AMC CD8b (dual 24bit Burr Brown DACs), MIT Terminator Cables / Lovan Rack

We rolled 6922/6DJ8's in the SEP-1, GE and Amperex Bugle Boys were our favorites.

    Demo room #2

Polk Monitor 7a's on factory stands. Mix of Tributaries and MIT interconns, 16/2 lamp cord speaker cables, JBL UREI amp (160/ch), MELOS SHA-1 Tube line stage, Analogic Design Group Tube CD player (Scott Nixon Modified), Empty JBL L166 cab for a stand.

Nothing but pure magic here fellas, I recently acquired the MELOS and JBL gear, and heard it for the first time as Henry did. You need to hear it to believe it.

Close up of the MELOS SHA-1 Tube Headphone amp / Line stage preamp.

    Stereophile Quoted:

"The SHA-1 is just so natural-sounding, so free of the grain and congestion and coloration that plague most preamps, that I wonder if you can really do significantly better at any price."

    End Quote

This one is a keeper boys, running dual Sovtek 6922's right now. This MELOS/ JBL/ Polk combo is nothing short of magical.

    Cheers,
    Russ

Here's one, uh, well. I'll take one for the team. I have no idea what was going on, but I look like I just ate a fistful of peyote.

Awesome. Looks like you guys had a lot of fun. Smokes, beer, speakers, amps oooooh:).

So I guess that JBL pro amp is great eh? Looks like you scored on another tube pre. Congrats! Is it better than the Golden Tube Audio?

LOL Love the pic of HBomb passed out. Did the evil twin come out to play too;)?

It was a fun time, for sure.

That JBL amp is SICK brotha. Weighs a ton, balanced inputs, its own fan on the rear. Has a ground lift switch, can be run mono, dual mono, or stereo. Independent volume level controls for each ch on the front.

The MELOS might replace the Golden Tube in the cave, I certainly need to test it in there. I will say, it is rather nice being able to choose between a $980 and $1300 Tube line stage.

    Cheers,
    Russ

    Doc,

Thanks, I'm keeping it all in perspective, I really am - but this 'high-end' **** is literally falling in my lap. There may have been 3 grand+ (retail) on the back end of the Monitor 7a rig, but it was still wired with 16/2 black lamp cord - and FLOORED us both. Henry's friend and co-worker stopped by - and he asked if that rig had a sub running. I said "nope, no sub - but THANKS for the compliment'.

I'm looking forward to you getting those OL mono's on your 800's. Your mileage may vary, but it should sound like a whole new speaker.

    Gidrah,

Henry may sound like he fell off the turnip truck, but he's as sharp as a friggin TACK under it all. Cathode, Triode, yeah whatever you say boss, it sounds friggin GREAT. Don't forget, the dude has TWO tube patents with the US gov. Don't buy it? You can look it up online.

    Sid,

Can't visualize who you are talking about, he is an odd looking fella, for sure.

    Chuck,

Yeah, he looks like a used car salesman, until he opens his mouth - trust me. He buzzed my tower so many times last night, all I could do is nod, and say 'yeah, I get it'.

    Sean,

No, those are RTR cabs that I'm retro-fitting with Design Acoustics drivers and crossovers. The $54 subwoofer is done, and I'll post pics and details this week, I promise.

It's all about the music fellas, and I've always had an appreciation for the 'back end' of a rig, but MAN is it so important. Don't give up on your speakers yet, bring them over here and let me put a little high-end on em - and you can take what you will from the 'experience'.

    Cheers,
    Russ

Wow! That's a lot of features for an amp. Not surprised you're keeping it. How many wpc is it? Same rating when it's in dual mono?

If you ever decide to part with the Golden Tube, let me know. I'm getting the ASL modded at one of ASL's repair center not too far from me.

I just had a look at your post again and wanna know if I'm reading this right. $3.25 for a pack of smokes????? Damn dude, we pay close to $8 here in Canada.

    160/ch cont @ 8.

I've got you down on the GT, I may have a line on a pair of Golden Tube 70w monoblocks - so stay tuned.

Here's one that slipped through. Dumb and Dumber? Hbomb kept slipping in and out of conciousness by nights end - but every time I woke him, he wanted another cold beer, and more tunes. Obviously, by the look on my face, the peyote mentioned earlier has REALLY taken effect.

    Trippin balls mofos, trippin balls.

    Yeah Russ,

Very nice gear. I'm going to have to load up the SUV and try to make it out to one of those TPG one of these times. Everytime I think I'm crazy about having a bunch of gear in multiple rooms all I have to do is look at all the stuff you have and I know I'm not alone in the audio addiction.

Yeah try out a tube amp in there somewhere too on those Monitors. If you ever come across a Rogue 88 from one of your scroungers check it out. Prodigious low end for a tube amp.

That last look, I had a flashback to Ozzy Osbourne's "Bark at the Moon" or something from that era from him;)

I never realized just how sexy I am:eek:

The trip to Dallas was more than I could have ever hoped for and buddy Russ took great care of me. The whole evening goes down in my life long list of great experiences. It did not matter what system of Russ's we were listening to because they all sound GREAT but the SDA's are simply amazing and Polk should really consider a reintroduction.

Ms. Brandy was way cool and much thanks is extended for her PATIENCE and Hospitality. I'm looking forward to the day I can reciprocate but unfortunatly I don't have as many toys as Russ ;)

The Evil Twin is out of commission for a while(much recovery needed:D ) The rum sent me over the top thats for sure. I am convinced a skunk snuck into the house over night and SHEEEAT in my mouth because I'm still suffering.

I see a lot of photo shop possibilities here and can only imagine what will happen.

    Thanks again Russ!

    Russ,
Thank you brotha! Can you let me know a few weeks in advance when you're ready to sell it because I want to make sure I have the cash.

LMAO:D By looking at the latest pic it looks like HBomb is the mellow drunk type that passes out and Russ is the more agressive drunk LOL.

    HBomb,
Was that your first experience with SDA? Tell us more... 2 patents on tubes? Which tubes did you work on?
I guess the Evil Twin is having a bad hang over eh?

Yes the Russman is responsible for my very first experience with SDA's and IMO they are awesome. I also left with a pair of CRS+'s and Last night I hooked them up in the cave and am completely amazed my room could sound that good and detailed to boot. Currently I'm using my 55i's as speaker stands but since Burdette will be the owner of them I have to buy a pair of stands for them ASAP.

I was a little concerned about the amp requirements of the CRS+ and was ALMOST positive that my Nak PA7 STASIS was able to handle the CRS+ in a common ground config. I called Polk yesterday for any insight and again much thanks to Kim and the great company of Polk for helping me out. All went as Kim(he used to sell the STASIS btw) had advised and I am thrilled with my new oldies. I have a lot of playing with position to get the best bass out of the room but with just a small amount of tweeking they sound pretty darn good.

the bulk of my work in tubes comes from pulsed power systems such as radars, lasars and linear accelarators. With these tube types I basically figured out a way to enclose the inner structures of the tube(heat disapation was a huge concern) in a single structure cutting cost of materials by about 2/3rds. I worked with NOAH out of DC for configuration controls and mil standards to ensure complete form, fit and function and when you see doplar weather on TV I may a have a tube in that system. The other warped idea was more so for lasars in which the physical geometry of the tube would minimize any back ion bombardment of the anode structure thus extending the life of the tube. I figured the tube life was extended by about 4 times over or so... probably more but very hard to quantify.

and yes I am a way mellow drunk... I'm the type that loves everyone and am the first to diffuse any disagreements. I am also a stupid drunk and have a lot of fun while enjoying my new found ignorance:p I think its a family thing....

Not sure I fully understand everything about the tubes but damn you're a mad scientist! My teacher talked about tubes for like 1 min and then went on to talk about transistors, diodes, etc for 3hrs LOL.

Glad to hear you really enjoyed the SDA. I can't wait to hear one for the first time.

I'm a mellow drunk too. I'd just sit there and pass out.

Looks like some awesome rigs, except the Hbomb rigamortis pics. I know so little about this stuff but you guys always make me want more. Its another one of those things in life that when you start learning you realize how ignorant you really are. One thing about it though, I love my SDA's and thats a common feeling from most who are in the know.
