  • It looks like an early '68, so it may have a 289 in it. They switched to the 302 mid year and the only tell tale signs of what time of year they were made was the flat painted side markers on the early and chrome raised side markers on the later '68s. I had an early '68 Mustang coupe with the 289.

All XR7's platforms had only the 302 engine. My earlier post was in reference to what Skips engine would be.

And yes there was a 2 barrel 289 available, but it appears it was very limited. The 302 was still the standard equipment engine.

2 channel: Anthem 225 Integrated amp; Parasound Ztuner; TechnicsTT SL1350; Vincent PHO-8 phono pre; Marantz CD6005 spinner; Polk Signature S60's with ZU Audio IBIS jumpers; Cables: Wireworld Eclipse IC; Audioquest Big Sur IC; ZU Audio Mission speaker cables; PS Audio AC-3 power cords, all into a PS Audio Dectet Power center.

All TV's sound enhanced by Polk Magnfi Mini's.

Other; SDA2BTL's, M10 series II, M7C's, Hafler XL600 amp, RB-980BX, Parasound HCA-1500 amp , P5 preamp, all in storage. All speakers have had crossover rebuilds, resulting in a small fortune invested in Sonicaps, and tweeter upgrades.

What all did the XR7 consist of? V8 and deluxe interior? I had lots of fun in a '69 blue Eliminator that a friend owned.

^^The major difference being the interior trim package. The exterior pillar and fender emblems were also different. All in all, it was just an appearance package.

There were also other versions of the XR7. there was the XR7-G with other engine options such as a 390. Then there was the GT-E with the venerable 427. The GT-E is like the holy grail.

Yes, 69 Eliminators are a favorite. Especially the 428 Cobra Jet version.

  • Beautiful car Skip! Congratulations. It's bittersweet for me to look at that car. My parents had a '68 Cougar in '69 and '70 when I was a junior and senior in high school. That was the car that I drove when I first got my license. Brings back SO many memories! My father has been gone now for 23 years and my mother gone for 9 years. I can picture them in that car! I still miss them a lot.
