The soul music loving world owes a debt of gratitude to Jerry Wexler, president of Atlantic Records. Ms. Franklin had been signed to record with Columbia Records in 1960. They wanted her to become the next Dinah Washington, a pop balladeer style singer. They had no success and her career completely stalled, in fact she was considering quitting the music business. In 1967 along comes Mr. Wexler who feels she should record music closer to her gospel origins. He takes her to the Fame Recording studio in Muscle Shoals and records I never Loved a Man (The Way I Loved You) and, of course, changes music forever.
