(PICS) Atrium5's for Atmos? Suggestions welcome.
Hi Everyone... You've all been very helpful in my other thread with speaker recommendations, now I'm looking to also start the next phase of my upgrade... Atmos.
My basement HT is odd and my speaker placement options are limited. So far I have come up with 2 options: but perhaps some of you may see something better.
Rather than ramble on, I'll show you! Here is a panoramic shot of my HT (I took some liberties with MSPaint to fill in the ceiling obstacles as well as possible speaker locations.
Option 1: I can do a 5.2.4 setup and put the 4 ceiling speakers as "wides" The speakers I'm considering are 4x bracket mounted Polk Atrium 5's These can be angled and pointed in towards the sweet spot. This option would allow me to get more distance between my listening spot and the presence speakers, but would require me to put them at the extreme width of the room pointing in. Does anyone have experience with Atmos speakers on the outside of the room firing in? I feel this option would work better for people not in the 'sweet spot'.
Option 2: I can do a 5.2.4 setup and put the 2 front ceiling speakers above and slightly in front of the center, not shown in the picture would be the 2 rear-mounted speakers on the back wall. The downside of this option is that all 4 presence speakers will be about 5 feet away from the 'sweet spot' and might exclude people in other seats. I am considering the same Polk Atrium 5's for this arrangement as well.
Speakers:
Due to my open ceiling, I am looking at closed speaker designs that can be bracket mounted. I'm open to other suggestions from the pro's!
Which option looks best? Or none of the above?
I have no experience with Atmos and am open to feedback.
Thanks for taking time and for any suggestions you may have!
P.s. - I'm getting a Yamaha A-2050 soon to power the surrounds and presence speakers. The LCR are powered by my Emotiva XPA-3.

From what it looks like, I think option 2 would seem to work better. For a 5.2.4 I think it would be better to have one set of speakers in front of your sitting position and another set behind. Spreading them to far left or right, I think you may lose some of the effect. Btw how tall are your ceilings?Home Theater Setup

Ceilings are 8ft 8in. With option 2, the Atmos speakers would be only be about 4-5 ft above my head. With option 1 I could get them further away from me, but you're right, it may be weird having sounds come from the extreme upper left/right that are meant to be overhead.
Thanks for the tip, I'm inclined to agree with you that overhead would be best... I was just curious if anyone had experience with setting up Atmos speakers so wide.My HT Gallery
