.....Went to college here and stayed. Was a great time to be young. Great WETA show about this time. Was a whole different world. Most of my close friends in college stayed in the area and are still here today. Came a year after the Beltway opened and many years before Metro.

....other great shows about DC appreciated.

I know someone did a special about Washington in the '70s

...despite everything, IT WAS a great time to be here and experience the change. Sleepy little town to the World capitol of today. The Beltway was only 2 lanes in each direction and seldom crowded. Drinking age was 18 and beer was $1.00 a six pack for Pabst Blue Ribbon. Students were involved with politics and the war. It was a serious time to be a student. Had its benefits with a lot of AWESOME free concerts.

    So lets see now....

Students are still knee deep in politics and wars, drinking age went up to 21, and a 6-pack of PBR is probably around 8 bucks. Not too shabby compared to 50 years ago. In many ways, nothing has changed.

When were you in DC last. Beltway is 4 or 5 lanes each way. Traffic at 3 am is a solid stream in each direction. No longer a sleepy town. Price of housing is up there with the best. Students are now only interested in getting a job. Meanwhile they move home to live with their parents. Beer is now $6.00 at a bar. A Meal cost about $25.00 per (Cheapest). Crime is up because of Haves and Have Nots.

Probably the same in every major city....except that the youngsters today are more interested in getting "Ahead" !!! Paying off school debt. Saving for a home. Planning for a family that society says .....?

Love the life I lived !!! Pity the youth of today in the coming years.

..Climate change with 1/3rd of China's soil is barren, oceans over fished. Over population in 3rd world countries. Wars in countries that supply natural resources . Religious wars that will never end. Glad I wouldn't be around !! I believe I lived in the "Hey" day of our civilization. Hope I can be proven wrong.

Just a THOUGHT on a beautiful day in Our Nations Capitol !!!

Sorry for the "DOWNER" !! ....just a thought.

We moved to Potomac MD in 67 when I was 17. After turning 18 I spent a lot of time either in Georgetown or making beer and cigarettes runs to DC on Friday and Saturday night. Lots of good times then. I am half surprised I didn't kill myself or hurt anyone else in those days.

Transferred from Ft.Riley kansas at 19 years old to FT Myer Va in 1977

Tomb of the unknowns, presidential escort, and the official ceremonial unit of the Army.

Did many funerals at arlington, and wed. night shows at jefferson memorial called torchlight tattoo, history of the old guard and united states with actors, caisson horses, special effects and the army band, fife and drum corp too.

Tourists would be streaming through, see us setting up, and sit on the steps overlooking the potomac until dusk and my guys would hit the lights, leikos, furnells, super troopers and storm troopers just like they used at concerts and tv stations.

Spent many hours in georgetown, much of it on either my triumph bonnevile 650 hardtail chopper, a hellacious bored out screamer honda 750, or an automatic honda 650.

Always regret never going to the cellar door to see the tubes or some of the other big acts, but after hitting the bars and record stores, my 98 bucks a week was gone.

But boy, to live just above the iwo Jima memorial, and be close enough to jog to the wash. monument for free for 2 years, yeah.

From a historical perspective, can't beat Washington D.C. with a stick. 50 years ago it may have been a decent small town, but it's grown for all the wrong reasons which I don't think I need to spell out. It may even be safe to say that a mere mention of that city brings a frown to most faces these days. Probably the most hated city in America. Historically though, it's tops.

We lived in the Palisades area just off of MacArthur Boulevard from the late 50s until 1962. We used to have a great time at Glen Echo Park until race tensions arose and spoiled that.
