Pioneer SX-1250 and Polk 10B's

I am really thinking about setting up a Vintage Setup with a Pioneer SX-1250 with a set of Polk 10B's with original stands. Of course I would mod the X-Overs in the 10B's. I guess if I really wanted to I could use my CRS+'s..

The Pioneer can be a little pricey but I think it would be fun to play with...

Thoughts??

I like Polk Monitor 7's with the Peerless tweeters in my basement Yamaha retro system. I tried the CRS+ but stayed with the the 7's.

    The SX-1250, legendary.

Hmmm! Not sure what the synergy will be like between an old Pioneer and the Monitors? I run a newer (by only a few years) Pioneer SX-3900 (which would be more like an SX-1050 at 120 watts x 2) on a set of old Advents and it sounds good enough. I've never tried any monitors on it though.

There is a growing consensus here that, perhaps, a classic Marantz is the receiver that has the best synergy with old Monitors.

Of course that Pioneer is a classic, but always "pricey" and may need a lot of "work"? But it sure does look pretty and very impressive when its all lit up!

    Happy hunting!

I think it would be fine as long as the SX-1250's in good tune (so to speak).

That said... I will always, always say that the best massmarket vintage match for the classic Polks are the Yamaha components of their era. I don't much care for the sound of the Superscope era Marantzes, but of course de gustibus non est disputandum. You pays your money and you takes your chance.

I agree with mhardy about the vintage Yamaha CR series being a fantastic match with the original Polk Monitor speakers (Monitor 5, 7, 10).

I have a Yamaha CR 2020 running my pair of Polk 10s and it is a great combo.

I think a 1250 and Monitor 10's would be a great match especially modded 10's. I have my 1250 running some Infinity QB's and it is a great match. The QB's have never sounded this good. I think the emit tweeters love the 1250 and the bass is all there too. etc, etc.

I run 10a with my Yamaha cr2040 @ i think its 120wpc & it sounds very nice with the SL1000 tweets. I would dare say with the Pioneer it would sound very nice on 7's or 10's & upgrades even better. Overall i like the 7's better IMO. Room size & placement might be a factor

I am running a Yamaha cr-2020 with modded 10a's with peerless tweeters and also have modded 5a's with peerless tweeters hooked up to switch back and forth. Very partial to vintage Yamaha receivers.

I currently have my 10b's being driven by an old BOZAK 929 Big Green Monster...and an old Onkyo P304 pre...a very good combo..that vintage gear lets those old 10's come alive....the electronics have been worked over of course...since the 10s are circa 84 and the amp is circa 77...lots of punch from that old gear...

I think you'll have fun. I had my restored SX-1250 pushing my recapped and restored Monitor 7Bs and it was great. Sounded very nice.

It all depends on how much you buy a 1250 for. It's quite an expensive piece of vintage gear and you may find you get more for your money with other brands and eras.

    Enjoy.

Great receiver, and should sound awesome, but a 1250 will cost you about $700.00, and full-boat restore another grand.
