On second thought... in the case of a preamp that uses tubes for input and doesn't use a tube for a rectifier. It can be called a hybrid?2Ch Tube Audio Convert

Ouch Marvda... Way to kill a guy's wallet. The DM's aren't too hard to drive and you can get away with a lot lower wattage especially considering the room size. Great options such as Parasound, B&K in the price range. I'm a little partial to the older Rotel/NAD integrateds or yesteryear as you can pick those up for ~200-300 and use them as the preamp or amp when you decide to upgrade.
Haha no kidding! Dude just buys his first pair of real speaker and now we're recommending $1500 amps! I've got him looking at Parasound HCAs and B&K ST's. Anything else in the $200-400 range worth looking at?Display: LG 47" LCD | AVR: Marantz SR5005 | BD: Panasonic BDT-210 | CD/SACD: Oppo 980 |

They'll run off of my Rotel for a little while and I'm lending him an HK AVR635 which (according to Harman) has 50amps per channel in stereo which should do fine until he saves a few bones for an outboard amp. No plans to take the paint off the walls just yet.Display: LG 47" LCD | AVR: Marantz SR5005 | BD: Panasonic BDT-210 | CD/SACD: Oppo 980 |

I'd keep an eye out for good local deals on some good brands mentioned earlier.2Ch Tube Audio Convert -
local deals simply aren't happening around here. Local CL is a joke and there are no hi fi stores selling used gear. It's going have to be an ebay, flea market, or audiogon purchase. Patience will be key.Display: LG 47" LCD | AVR: Marantz SR5005 | BD: Panasonic BDT-210 | CD/SACD: Oppo 980 |

I wouldn't call mine "skills" as it's something I've just recently started learning. Another friend of mine is much better. He and I have fixed a few amps replacing caps and whatnot. More confident that I could repair something if I knew the problem, not confident that I'd be able to easily diagnose the problem.Display: LG 47" LCD | AVR: Marantz SR5005 | BD: Panasonic BDT-210 | CD/SACD: Oppo 980 |
