Potential Buyer for My Lsi-15's Asked this Question -

Says he's building a system one piece at a time.

He has a Sony STR-DN1040 amp that he says is not recommended for less than 6 ohm speakers.

The LSi's are 4 ohm.

Wants to know what the solution would be.

My advice is to buy a different amp.

Anything else?

    He would need a new AVR capable of handling 4 ohm loads, such as one of the newer Pioneer Elite SC series or if his current AVR has pre outs he can add an amp.

    The previous gen 1030 was tested by HOME THEATER and measured:

    Power Output @ 1% THD
    2 Ch @ 8 ohms - 134.7 watts / 2Ch @ 4 ohms 167.7 watts / 5CH @ 8 Ohms 90.4 @ 8 Ohms

    The 1040 is supposed to have a larger transformer and is slightly more powerful. Audioholics reviewed it in Pure Direct Mode powering 4 Ohm MartinLogan Theos speakers. I would tell him to buy the speakers and he could have a little fun in 2 ch mode until he gets his cash up....because the Sony would have to go bye-bye as it does not have pre-outs. So, he would need other options like a later Elite SC's as suggested or the more ideal pre/pro + amp....if he wants to have some real fun with them.

    Put a fan on it and don't crank the volume. Then buy a real amp when he can afford it.

    Usually the first protection that gets triggered when you're running low impedence speakers is the thermal one, but at reasonable volume and with some extra cooling, he should be fine in the meantime.
