New amp for my 2.3's

I am looking at amps for my 2.3 TL's. The first is an Adcom 5500, the other is a Tannoy SR840. I am familiar with Adcom gear, but not the Tannoy. There is a significant price difference between the two, does anyone have any experience with the Tannoy?

No info on the Tannoy.

But the 5500 is *not* a common ground amp. Not an issue if you have an AI-1/Dreadnought or the like. But just wanted to throw that out there.

He says they were Nakamichi PA7's, which he also had sitting on top of his subs. Now, I don't know about you, but taking advice from someone that doesn't know placing amps on top of subs is a very bad idea certainly seems like a very bad idea.

You can strap the ground terminals on the GFA-5500 and you're set. No need for a AI-1 if you dont have one.

The OP can read the thread. It will also point him to some other sites where the Crown has some long discussion threads and hopefully have enough information.

I remember reading that thread a while back. I guess it is 30 days risk free from Guitar center should I decide to go that route. But right now, this Tannoy has my interest, but it doesn't seem to be very common, not a lot of user testimonials or reviews.

Well with it not being very common, not much in reviews, used and no ability to try it. Well I guess I don't get the allure.

There is more to "allure" than trying the same old hat. Some folks enjoy trying out new things.
And there are instances of boutique brands or relative unknowns that turn out to be relative game changers.

I remember when the latest giant killer was the $59.00 Toshiba DVD player. Oh yeah, lots of glowing Internet talk/reviews about that one. The reality was it sounded like poo nuggets and good luck finding one today that still works.

I'm always amazed at the gullibility of folks that keep falling for the latest gaint killer when time has proven again and again that they don't exist.

I am not at all concerned about the amps condition or functionality. It's coming from a friend and I'll get to hear it before picking it up. But i will be hearing it with HIS system. I like to check here to see if anyone has used it before, particularly with SDA's. You know him well important system synergy is!

Who said anything about Giant Killer? I went the used route on amps and had some issues and decided to:

1. Go new
2. Purchase from an outfit that allowed hassle free returns

I hope he likes the Tannoy but with out there being much out there vs Adcom/Rotel/Parasound it simply wouldn't be for me. The OP asked and I, just like you, gave an opinion.

I would suggest if he can get the Crown or comparable at the same time that he is going to demo the Tannoy (even if not on his own speakers). Nothing wrong with that. Like was pointed out earlier "all about trying something out of the norm".

Actually, the OP asked for opinions on a specific amp...the Tannoy. You interceded with an unrelated product and an attempt to bash the Tannoy...even though the thread you referred to was about Nakamichi amps. Then you tried to vindicate yourself by throwing out some other random BS THAT THE OP ASKED NOTHING ABOUT. I understand that you want to wave your weiner to the sky and proclaim how much bigger and badder it is than anyone elses' weiner...but eventually, instead of coming across as someone with something valid to add to the thread, you simply come across as some weirdo waving his weiner in the wind.

BTW, I like how you tried to twist my quote into something that you try and make you look right. When in actuality, all you are doing is giving suggestions that the OP never asked for. So...Monk...what part of the OP's original questions aren't you grasping? He asked about Tannoy...specifically the Tannoy SR840. I have gone ahead and highlighted the question to help you get beyond your confusion.

Now, you would have an argument if the question was "What amp do you guys recommend...". But the OP asks for opinions about a specific amp brand...and even a specific model of that brand.

In light of the OP not being able to get input about a specific amp I did indeed make another suggestion based on a like user here that has SDA speakers. This is part and parcel what these boards are about.

The OP should get the Tannoy and sell it if they don't like. Because while you're hear to argue, I'm here to try to give some food for thought. Certainly not saying my way is the highway. Nothing I have done has harmed the OP in any way and he can certainly pick up the Tannoy with or with out input.

Looks like a nice solid build. Same as the 5500 though, it doesn't look like a common ground, but as Malbec pointed out, you can strap the grounds.
Has a similar toroidal to the GFA-555 or GFA-5500. I wouldn't hesitate to give it a shot if it is priced right and comes from a known source.

Nice justification for trying to derail the thread. Usually, on *any* forums, when a fellow member asks for SPECIFIC information on a SPECIFIC item, it is nothing but a disservice to the person asking the question to go "I have no idea but you should get this instead *insert unrelated pro amp thread and an attempt to degrade the product being asked about even though the OP didn't ask for alternate suggestions and the amps being replaced in the thread referenced weren't the brand you were attmpting to degrade*".

trav0810, it appears to be a basic old school design amp with the large caps. The newer designs use a lot of smaller caps, which results in greater speed/pace. You state there is a significant price difference between the two, is the Tannoy is the cheaper one?

'Tout your own amp'? What amp would that be? What touting? Be specific. Point out any/all effusive words and prose that I've posted. The OP asked for review/information on the Tannoy. None, zero, zilch have been forthcoming. Even a quick Google hasn't returned anything for the OP. I think it was more than reasonable to posit a 3rd alternative. ?? Claims where made. Just asking to see if ZLTFUL is a liar or if I am. The OP should get the Adcom IMO given that Tannoy is Circa 1984. Who knows how serviceable it is if it needs it. Are the caps even still wet? Maybe you should give it up.

I wonder: When someone calls Polk Sales asking about Polk Speaker X or Polk Speaker Y for an application do you think that may be they are suggested Polk Speaker Z?

Monk, the Crown is something I have considered before, but never pulled the trigger since my prior experience with prior experience with pro amps has been less than stellar. It would be different if I had a Guitar Center locally, but I do not.

Common Ground is not a big issue with the amp, I'll buy an A-1 if needed. I might use a single amp. I might buy 2 of the Adcoms and vertically biamp...who knows?
