New here and need advice on SDA 1B's with Sansui 9090DB

Like the title says, I have a 9090DB. I'm looking at buying a set of Polk Audio SDA 1B's.
I think I read that these speakers are 5 ohm. In the manual for the Sansui, it states, "speakers of 4ohms and less can break down the unit".
I see that I'm slightly on the safe side, but can anyone shed some light on the risks I could run. The 9090DB is a
favorite of mine.

Thanks, Dave.

As well it should be.
(there are a few CP'ers who poo-poo the 9090db, but they are evil and should be destroyed)

Do your 9090db and your SDA 1b's and yourself a favor and look for amplification elsewhere. Folks here can give you lots of good suggestions regarding that.

just curious. What does it mean by evil ? I just looked online for my own knowledge. Its 150wpc @ 4ohm receiver--4ohm speakers. Does it mean it would be safe to run those ? Or does it need a powerful amp ?

When a speaker is rated at say ....4 ohm nominal, think of that as an "average". It could dip to 3 ohm, even 2 ohm, and also rise to 5 or 6 ohm. Depends on the load put on the speaker as in volume and type of music that can get demanding. Which because of some of these dips, we always recommend an amp for 4 ohm speakers. Most receivers, even the more costly aren't really up to the task of power hungry floorstanders.

So could it hurt the speakers if your under powered ? Yes Sir.....along with the receiver.

Ok. I can understand that. I wasnt sure. As those are 4ohms speakers & receiver will power 4ohms also--but i understand it would be better quality from a power amp so it doesnt clip if goes lower than 4ohm as you say. Especially for there size & hunger for power

What all that means is that under NORMAL applications/conditions the amp and speaker combo you speak of would probably be fine all day long. But these are not normal times, and seeing how you had enough sense to ask beforehand, you're probably not going to use it under normal applications/conditions. You want to make it loud so it sounds real, and if you do that for a long time with that amp and those speakers... probably not a good idea to try and dj disco night with that combo. If those are the speakers you like, get an amp that won't hurt them. If that is the amp you like, find a pair of speakers it can't hurt.

Oh yeah I forgot, you're not normal. Deal with it.

    Thank you for the replies.
I ended up missing out on these ones. :(
Now looking at RT11t for a good price.
There is a Sansui separate in my future. So we'll see.

Didn't mean to imply that the 9090db was evil; I was referring to those who don't share my particular facination/appreciation for vintage Sansui gear. And while I may have said "they (those people) should be destroyed", I meant "destroyed" in a good way, ie, a good thrashing about the neck and head until they come to their senses.

As far as going the way of Sansui separates, just be aware that the "good" Sansui gear is not cheap. It may even be argued correctly that it is "overpriced" on places like Ebay.
For example, if you come across a TU-9900 tuner that goes for $250 on Ebay, you can be sure that you'll be spending some money at your tech's place of business getting it back to spec.
Same thing applies to the "good" pre's (CA-3000, CA-5000) and power amps (BA-3000 and BA-5000). Sansui built these like brick outhouses, but being almost 4 decades old, you can figure it's going to take some work/time to get them back to primo condition.
And, as you'll discover checking Ebay, etc, those units aren't cheap. In fact, they're so far from cheap that cheap isn't located on the same planet.

IMO, you'd do your wallet a HUGE favor getting some SDA1B owner's recommendations for some good newer used gear.
Unless your independently financially wealthy in which case .... have I ever mentioned how much I admire and respect you ? I am, btw, open for adoption.

Here's a a link for a little video of some dood with some nice Sansui gear (I won't comment on some of the other equipment shown ).

So if you have the money or time (DIY), just make sure you measure twice and cut once.

Agreed. Ive never heard that model but its got to have some ponys. Ive had a small 45 wpc G5000 and it did a fine job. Cant imagine the bigger better models

    Thanks, lots of interesting stuff.
As for some not approving of the 9090DB, that's too bad. It was given a hearty approval by the worlds toughest audio critic.
The "wife" who usually just shakes her head in disgust when I get her to listen this new ..... fill in the space, was actually impressed with the sound of this Sansui.
I find it a very pleasing and natural sounding receiver, and effortless when turning up the volume.

Anyway, in my first post I asked about ohm rating for SDA's. In a latter post I missed out on those, but had a line on RTA 11t's.

The 11t"s are rated 6 ohm, and in reading about them it seems some owners are modding them to TL's.
The TL's are rated at the 8 ohms I need.
So..... will modded RTA 11t's now be an 8 ohm speaker?
This seems like it should be obvious but, if you don't know, ask.

    Thanks, Dave.

Actually, they rated as compatible with 8 ohm outputs, but they are still 6 ohm nominal. So, the answer to your question is no. That said, you should be ok running them with your Sansui.
