Monitor 70's Tweeter problem or no Tweeter problem

Just purchased a set of m70's and there is alot of talk about poor quality tweeters.....is this just talk because of poor power supply or truth that they are ultimately doomed?

I found/find them great for home theater use and OK for music. But there are definitely more *musical* tweeters out there.

I have had mine for a couple years with no problems.If you under power them and turn the volume up to ear splitting levels then you might be asking for tweeter problems.Feed them some power and sit back and enjoy.

Yea, that seems to be what most of the issues have been is underpowered overdriven.......I will be using onkyo txsr607 bi-amping just the two speakers for stereo listening only....

Don't waste your time "bi-amping" as you can't and won't be doing it correctly with an AVR.
To correctly actively bi-amp, you need a pair of amps with the same gain, an active crossover and to remove the passive crossovers from the signal path.
Passively bi-amping is similar except you end up with 2 separate passive crossovers for HF and LF.

Either way, just give those 70s some quality high current power and they will far exceed most everything else in the same price range.

Definitely true. I've had mine for years and they do a good enough job for HT that I don't even bother thinking of upgrading them. Two channel, you can do much better with other Polks (see below!).

The only problem with M series tweeters is that newbies OVERDRIVE their cheap low power AVRs to ear bleeding levels and then "complain" that they popped the Ms tweeters, RIGHT! Smart move, Einstein!

I've driven my M-70s with a Denon AVR and an Adcom 555 which is a 200 watt x 2 high current amp, to fairly significant volumes and have NEVER popped one tweeter.

Just be sensible with your levels on the Onkyo. I run a TX-SR 805 on the M-70s and I rarely get up beyond 75 on a max of 99 on its scale, and that is with the system callibrated DOWN about 6 db so that's really only 69 on the scale. Plenty loud.

I have powered mine with top notch rotel and bryston amps. all my monitors at one point or another have had a dead tweeter. I use the monitors for HT.

They do come with a great 5 years warranty. All you do is put the bad tweeter in a a box with the speakers serial number on a sheet of paper and mail it to polk. be sure to include a sheet with your contact info and shipping address.

wait two weeks and you will have new drivers/ tweeters/ crossovers, what ever you sent in. No need to call them.
Monitor 70 is a good starter speaker.


I have looked into getting new tweeters for my polks. after the 5 years is up i will do so. they are just 1" tweeters and pop out of the plastic bezel.

If your receiver has preouts, you can always look for a quality used amp from Adcom, like the GFA-535 or 545. Either one of these will work well with your speakers. But I imagine you'll be just fine with the set up you have now. Don't push your system to ear bleeding levels and you'll be fine.

I've been running a Monitor system past it's warranty period (5 years). M-70s/CS2/M-30s and the CS2 and M-30s were DEMOS. Not one tweeter failure! Nada! So I suggest you just play these as sane levels.

Also, they have a break in period. If you ABUSE the volume during that time, you WILL take your tweeters out! Burn them in at "moderate" volumes and you'll BE FINE!

So, don't CLIP your amp, burn in slowly, and enjoy YEARS of service; many, many, many years! Because Polk makes a "good" product!
