I'll admit it - the first one is a guilty pleasure; I've seen it about 5 times. The witty repartee between Lawrence and Smith is great and Leoni looked fine.

Any opinions on the sequel (better or worse than the first)?

I saw it in the theater. Was pretty good, although the last portion of the movie dragged out too long. The movie could have been about 20 minutes shorter.

    Give it a rental first.

My thoughts are the same as John. I don't remember a whole lot but I do remember the end dragging out. I did enjoy the movie and would see it again.

Not much of the "comedy action movie"/ "40 million a movie Will Smith" fan BUT I had a full house last night and this was a great movie.
Lots of awesome action - another insane audio highway scene - slow motion bullets - eye candy - killer camera work - and total careless profanity.
Once again a long one. Too long over 2:20.
Not as dynamic as recent movies having to turn the volume up a couple clicks. Very good bass even in most gun scenes. Some of the explotions lacked a little less punch than I like.
Picture quality was very sharp and detailed. "High Definition Transfer" per dvd promo.
First time for me but 2/3's through the movie for about 10 minutes had a problem with the scaling/progressive scan but then it cleared up. Very Weird!!!!
    PQ - 4
    SQ - 3.5+
    Movie 3.5+
I will buy it used for $10.

Just got it! Didnt have a chance to watch it yet! One question -on the back in the info box it says "Mastered In High Definition".
Anyone know what they mean by that?

"High Definition Transfer" per dvd promo.
Thats what I put in my "review".
It was the filming or editing process. Put on the box to make people excited, a push buy terminalogy and for HT nuts to ask questions. Basicly it is saying that it should have better than average picture quality. ;) IMO

    Rented and watched last night.

    Movie:

Great popcorn fun. Totally over the top in terms of violence, action, guns, mayhem, explosions, and gore. Smith and Lawrence are still hot as a duo - almost ten years later (time flies). Check your brain in at the door and have a good time.

    Audio:

About the best surround use I have ever heard - very aggressive on the gun shot ricochets and panning was spot on. Responded very well to forced EX matrix decoding, with good rear surround activity.

Voices were clear, full, easy to follow and well centered on the screen.

Bass was decent - pretty deep, a bit lacking in dynamic range, and not cooked overly hot. I could have used a little more kick in the **** on the house explosion.

    Video:

Wow - what a pretty transfer. Grain is notably absent, detail is excellent, color saturation looked almost perfect (reds ran a bit hot), and black levels are deep with good detail. This is a VERY good looking DVD.

Minor edge enhancement is visible in a few scenes (mostly around Smith's head against bright backgrounds), but it's not a deal breaker.

And (amazingly) there is a chroma encoding problem on the beach scene where Syd meets with Tapia. Her sarong displays the alt. flag chroma encoding error loud and clear, both on the beach in the chair, and also as she walks toward the water. How Columbia missed that one is beyond me; the rest of the movie shows no chroma encoding errors at all.

    Extras:

I haven't even looked at Disc 2 yet, but Disc 1 has several Columbia movie trailers and ALL of them (except BB 1) are in 16x9 anamorphic with DD 5.1. A very nice touch for HT buffs - SWAT and UnderWorld looked and sounded great.

I'll definitely pick this one up in the used bin for $10.

Good to hear Doc. Ya, the surrounds were amazing. My 4 rear channels were going off.
Have to check out the trailers - 5.1 is rare. I can't wait for Underworld.
    Doc nailed this review.;)

On second watching, I noticed moderate chroma problems with the "Zoot" lettering on the van and jackets, and also very minor on Syd and Tapia's lips. Her sarong was by far the worst, though.

Can anyone else substantiate chroma problems with this DVD? I honestly don't think it's the 2900, but it sure is disturbing for a 2003 Columbia DVD to display chroma encoding errors.

PS - Scott - good to have you back a little more frequently.
