The repair shop wanted 125.00 to replace this due it is worn/cracked a bit. Is this something I can do if I just pick up a new belt and install myself....it APPEARS pretty straightforward, but I hate to assume:question:

Agreed. That seems like a REALLY good price.

Maybe the price was just for the belt and no labor....not sure.

Anyhow, I did a quick search on how to do this yourself and words like "torque wrench" and "ft. lbs. of pressure" came up....I think I will leave this to the professionals.

The serpentine belt went on my wife's jeep, and that was pretty much the end of her jeep. My advice, let the pros do this one.
Good music, a good source, and good power can make SDA's sing. Tubes make them dance.

Can't say what's involved w/Hondas but, approx 30-45 seconds will be long enough to change the S. belt on millions of GM vehicles due to their super simple, spring loaded tensioning device. My vintage Bonneville requires only an 18 mm socket and a breaker bar or ratchet to relieve the tensioner pulley. I'd bet that there's probably at least 3 vids on youtube showing how the Honda belt is done and.......$125.00 is an awfully big fee for a simple non-timing belt change IMO.

If $125 is for the belt and labor, I say let the pros do it. Might seems easy and straightforward but if you have never done it before and are going by a youtube video, I wouldn't risk it. If that slips off or is installed wrong, it can mean major damage to the car.

That is a good price, FWIW. We'd charge $125 in labor alone for drive belt(s) on a Hyundai.

Make sure you change the belt first and then drink the beer..not vice versa...LOL!

I've always found that things like this are easier than you may think. Give it a try and if you get stuck then put it back together and take it to someone. Like some old movie says "if you can't fix it yourself then its not really yours".

BTW, I always drink the beer first. :)

Yea but some time they are not. I dont know the specifics of the honda pilot but my wifes Volvo XC90 was a pain. The crank pully had a big disk bolted to it. You cannot get the belt around it with out unbolting it. In order to get at it you have to take the passanger front tire, and inner fender well out. Then the spring load tensioner required a specail volvo torx wrench. There isnt enough room to get a normal torx bit and ratchet between the spring loaded tensioner and the unibody / car frame.

I put the new serpentien belt on while I had it tore appart for the 125k mile timing belt and water pump replacement. So the inner fender and front tire had to come off any way, but I would have been pretty frustrated if I was doing just the serpentien belt in the drive way. I threw the old belt away because there is no way your going use the old one on the side of the road for an emergency.

For that coin, let the pro's do it. Here in Chicago, that would just take care of labor costs. Plus if it breaks down the road, you have someone to blame.

I'd do a bit of research, including watching the you tube video. Check on the tools needed vs. what you have on hand. You'll get a sense of whether or not it's outside your capabilities.

If it were me it'd be tough to decide without a bit more information.

suggest to purchase the OEM Honda belt.

could have issue with aftermarket replacements.
