My trusty HK 7200 is exhibiting strange behavior tonight. My L/R mains output levels took a dive tonight and are -10dB and -15dB below the center speaker level. All my channel settings have always been within 1 dBs of each other since I've set up my HT 5 years ago with no real changes.

I noticed the right channel had dropped around 5 dB a couple weeks ago and made changes to the settings to compensate. I never gave it much thought until tonight when I noticed I had to crank way louder than normal to get any sound from the mains. I did play it pretty hard last night in stereo mode as the wife was out of town for our #3 grandson's birth, but that has never had an ill effect before.

Normal settings would be:

Left main = 0dB
Center = 0dB
Right Main = +1dB
L Rear = 0dB
R Rear = -1dB

Settings tonight per my SPL meter are:

Left main = 0dB
Center = -10dB
Right Main = +5dB
L Rear = -10dB
R Rear = -10dB

It is as though the stereo main settings took a 10dB drop overnight in the preamp section. The results are the same whether I use internal amplification or pre-out to an external amp. The sound is still great, as long as I wildly calibrate the channel settings.

Any thoughts? I have done a hard processor reset with no change.

    Sounds like it needs repair.

    You may be right. I can't get my mind around why it is crapping out slowly. It still sounds great, just acting wonky.

    this issue is very popular with the HK 7000 and 7200. happened with my 7000 too; center and rears. If you google it, they say to replace a bank of small caps on the top board. I sold mine on CL for $200, then go to Denon AVR and HK Amps. Gonna love that HK sound

    I'll pop the top and see if I can see any cap issues. It is funny that the channels that have dropped aren't even using the internal amps, they are preamp out only. I did hook up the receiver amp channels to make certain that I didn't have an amp going out with the same results, so I assume a preamp/processor issue.
