ten minutes before the kids went to bed......

Was off all day, had a spot waiting on the rack. Was also the B-day for the now 6YO so that's perfectly fine, she's more precious. Anyone know what I should look for in values for a DC offset at the speaker terminals? Figure I should perform a preliminary check before I hook it up.

I know...it didn't happen if, but had to get the kids in bed.

Offset under 50 milivolts or so would be fine.

    Allright, down to business here.

Amp looks spectacular give it's age, one tiny marr on a heatsink fin but not really noticeable. I powered it up and I have 2 mV on the right channel but have -1.6 on the left...is a neg value ok? Probes were correct on the +&-.

No nudies yet but here she is.

Looks minty. Offset is very low and as for the -1.6mv the value can be either pos. or neg.

Not really sure how to write this up, this is my first seperate amp. Since I have to censor myself, i'll just say that I didn't imagine one piece would change the system like this.

Rewind to earlier this afternoon, I have 100 hrs on the break-in of my 2B TL mod and was playing Peter Gabriel "So" on my Denon 3300 earlier, among other titles. I wasn't really blown away but noticed the more gradual transition from the mids to the highs. After 10 hrs there was noticeable brightness and the tweeter really stood out, but now it's settled down. I was moving the speakers around, moving sound panels to block reflections...etc...little better.

I hooked up the B&K, ran a Toslink to the Yamaha CX-1000 and a set of BJC LC-1 RCA to the amp, was using the 3300 solely before that.

    Are you serious?

Immediately, everything blended so seamlessly, the soundstage popped open and the details are unreal. Last thing I was thinking about was a bright tweeter....needless to say there was a big ole grin on my grille. I know it gets better and there is much better out there.... but this is a quantum leap from what I have been listening to.

    Jesse, you're absolutely correct.....get a man's amp. Thanks again.

Looks sweet and we might have another B&K fan in the making ];->. After I got my first one, I ended up with 3 more. I sold one off to give a Adcom 5800 a try. I'll probably get rid of the Adcom and get another B&K for the bedroom rig.

    Happy listening,

A B&K amp is on my list of want to haves. Great to hear you made the jump. Don't worry too much about the rabbit hole, it has a silky lining.

I just got my B&K a few weeks ago and I love it! I will never power my mains with just an AVR again.

I've had my brothers Parasound HCA-1000A hooked up now while I try to find a place to get my B&K serviced, and I can't decide which one sounds better. They definetly sound different, but I love both of them. These two amps have been my first hands-on experience with more power.
    AVR - Yamaha Aventage RX-A800
    Amps - B&K Components ST2140 (for mains) and Parasound HCA-1000A (bi-amping center)
    Mains - RT1000i Towers
    Center - CS400i
    Sub - BIC Acoustech PL200

My neighbors listen to very good music, whether they like it or not

I have a B&K AV5000 that I have been using for about the last 2 or 3 years. I like it so much I am using it and having the pio elite as a pre. It is a monster and performs rather admirably. I wouldn't look any further than B&K if I am in the market again soon.

Seems some of the original crew from BK has moved on and have either formed or joined to what is Eastern Elite. Not sure of the whole story but their site is http://www.ee-av.com/
Yeah, I see more of these in the future.....the 3300 will surely end up in the bedroom or possibly power the center and surrounds.

I have a Parasound HCA 1000a running my SDA's right now also and love it. How does the B&K sound different as I would like to try one some time down the road. Kind of wondering what to expect when that time comes.

Only Parasound I ever heard was in like '90.
    So I won't comment.
I can say, you put a little money in the B&K's, and you probably won't look at other amps.
Almost point to point wiring in the early ones.
Few upgrades, your search will be over pretty quick.
    I have a Carver TFM-35 that I don't use.

The B&K is a very smooth and warm amp, IMO. The sound is even all around, without much difference in levels between the mids and highs. The Parasound wakes the mid drivers up a little more on my rt1000i's and makes them "in your face" and punchy. Honestly, I can't decide though if the punchy sound of the Parasound is better than the smooth sound of the B&K. This is using my RX-A800 as a preamp, crossover set to 60hz. I am by no means an expert in audio though, so I apologize for not being able to describe both amps more. Overall, I would be happy using either in my system.
