HDMI question

Quick question. Got my son a PS3 for Christmas. Got it hooked up to an older Sony 42" LCDRP that only has 1 HDMI input which is being used by the cable box so we can get HD. Is there some kind of splitter that allows 2 devices to use 1 input? I was checking out MP and every splitter I saw appeared to be designed to spit a signal to multiple sets, not the other way around.

TIA

You need a "HDMI Switcher/switch box"

Another option is if your cable box and TV have analog component connections use that for your cable box and put the PS3 on HDMI. At most your cable service is 720p and you likey wouldn't notice too much of a difference between HDMI and Component for HD cable.

I run an hdmi to my projector and a component to the TV. It's my opinion that the component has a much richer and warmer color to it although HDMI is clearer but not noticeably clearer. The difference between the settings between 720p and anything above is hardly noticable even on my projector and I don't believe anything on directv or cable is higher than 1080i.

Thanks again guys. Another question though, if I run component cables from my cable box I lose the ability to watch HD channels don't I? I was under the impression HD had to go thru HDMI...

Nope, Component can carry HD up to 720p so your still fine. You just dont get the added benefit of one cable for both audio and video as you need to run a component cable (picture ONLY) + RCA cables (audio only).

Cool deal. TV is only 720 anyway and here is a huge difference in PQ between standard def and HD.

you can run a digital out audio which is better than rca in some cases for surround sound. If your tv is 720p, set your cable box to output 720 as that is your native resolution and it will always look better.

I agree but since its all direct to the TV digital (coaxial, spdif) wont make a difference since it will be stereo only.

I have a remote controlled HDMI switcher. My TV has 2 HDMI inputs but I needed 3. One for the DishTV box, One for Roku player, One for DVDp. I run all 3 into the remote switcher and then one output from the switcher to one HDMI input on the TV. That still leaves me with one on the TV for future use. I bought it off Amazon for around $20.
