I couldn't figure out why my needle was skipping on my wife's old turntable. It's a gemini xl-500 dj table, so I thought it shouldn't skip. I scoured the net, took the thing apart, leveled it completely, did tons of stuff.
the needle itself was not coming down far enough so the cartridge was slightly touching the record at an angle and was not only making extra noise it was pushing the needle across the record, especially at the front edge of the record. I simply bent the sucker down firmly but gently to bend it.
It works and the sound is now increddddddddible!
Either way it's a bent needle so the wife is getting one brand new one for xmas. I was close to getting a new player if I had to, must ....have....vinyl......

The only experience I've had was with an old Panasonic player I got from my mom when I was a teen. It was a sweet looking slide-out unit (with an open/close button on the front, and a little glass door that opened when it slid out)
Very first record I had was either Bon Jovi's Slippery When Wet, or Micheal Jackson's Billy Jean.

if you are listing to "those crappy old records" then you're not hearing all that vinyl has to offer.
the general public only has memories of vinly from the 60, 70's and part of the 80's... and then CD's took over.
most people have never heard a well put together turntable with a good needle and the componets to make it sound good. I think a good number of people would be surprised how good "those crappy old records" can sound. :cheesygrin:PolkFest 2012, who's going>?

It's a decent turntable for mixing, the needle alone is $65 online, and now I've gotten my system perty darn good for what I have. I have the crs+, done many or most of the mods, added an external quality amp, etc
My wife and I were just in awe and amazement and not talking as we melted into the couch while listening to my recent pick up of Warren Hayes. She remarked it was better than the Fillmore where we saw him live.
That's a stretch, but it's close. Now I'm going to buy a record cleaning machine for Christmas.
My wife picked up two or three boxes of original Elvis records. I don't know if they have any value, but I'm going to have the King over to dinner tonight!
