I think it's pretty safe to say that a fair percentage of Vette owners are in over their heads as soon as they sign on the dotted line. The Vette is simply not as entry level a bit of muscle driveability-wise as it is availability-wise. Add to this a driver's lack of respect for (or ignorance of) its potential, a dose of immaturity and a dash of invincibility, and you've got video.

Completely different situation with those who have grown up with muscle, built their own rides and know their limitations and responsibilities.

Whether you built it or bought it, if it doesn't scare you, it's going to teach you a lesson the hard way.

    I think you're misunderstanding me.

I'm not saying you should fear your vehicle. But "respect" is a bunch of baloney. If you're going to have a performance vehicle and desire to push it's limits, it's going to push yours as well.

I've had 3 vehicles in my life that have pushed me to a point where I was not prepared. I ran out of talent before the car did. I eventually got comfortable and became a better driver because of it. My Mustang had neck breaking acceleration like no other car I have ever been in. Not even the Ford GT that I got a ride in would rip your head backwards like that Mustang could. My Thunderbird could take a turn far faster than I was comfortable with. I over-corrected for no reason a couple of times and ended up facing the wrong way or in the grass. Eventually I figured out what 1 lateral G felt like it and just because my butt was sliding in the seat doesn't mean the car was sliding too. It meant I needed better seats!

The one that scared me the most was my Ranger. That's the only vehicle I ever lost complete control in and was along for the ride. It's a helpless feeling. Really freaks you out. But I learned alot from those couple of times where the Ranger bit back. I've seen people get scared the first time their car picks up the front wheels at the line and never want to get behind the wheel again. I've seen people totally freak out about over-cooking a turn and spinning off in to the weeds. Even though they got away unscathed and undamaged, they have a very hard time getting over it instead of learning from it. I even have a friend who refuses to drive pick up trucks in the rain because he was driving my Ranger by himself about 12 years ago now and it stepped out on him on an oddly banked turn. It whipped him around like a tilt-a-whirl. I got a call from the cops to come get my truck. When I got there, he was on the side of the road, with an EMT, an oxygen tank and shaking. It was just a 180 but it took him by complete surprise and apparently scarred him for life.

In other words, don't get cocky, kid or the car is gonna give you a lesson you won't forget.

Maybe this theory about Corvette drivers has some merit?

    Bizarre Corvette Crash Injures 2

Police Say Corvette Hit 2 Vehicles, Went Airborne Before Flipping Over

NORWOOD, Mass. -- At least two people were injured after a bizarre crash sent a Corvette airborne in Norwood Saturday night.

Police said a woman driving a Corvette came out of a dealership on Route 1 and lost control, causing the car to flip and hit a pole before landing upside down.

Officers said the car crashed in front of Jake & Joes Restaurant about 5:27 p.m.

Paramedics said the woman was flown to a hospital.

Investigators said the woman hit two other vehicles during the crash. One person from one of the vehicles was taken to Norwood Hospital.

A witness told NewsCenter 5 that the woman in the Corvette races cars for a living and had stopped at a Chevrolet dealership looking for a faster car. The lot apparently didn't have one so she went to test drive a Ferrari at a nearby dealership.

The witnesses said something happened at the Ferrari dealership which spurred the woman to peel out and then crash a short distance away.

Police are still investigating what caused the crash.

I remember that helpless feeling when my 'Vette (that's CHEvette, not CORvette....no, really) went airborne for a split second when I hit Gough Street, going downhill, in San Francisco. Went just a little bit too fast downhill. Never again.

My 'Vette and I both survived.

Wow. I just can't get over this quote: "he hit me and kept accelerating and climbed on top of the hood of my car". I honestly cannot begin the understand the level of stupidity and incompetence that the truck driver exhibits. To say the least, the truck driver's insurance company is not going to be happy to be paying a claim like that - assuming he had insurance, that is. I can pretty much guarantee the insurance company will be dropping that client after this; he's just too much of a risk.

    Oh, and all drivers suck.

That looks completely intentional and is merely a textbook exhibition of total control of your vehicle.

I think you may very well be right. The guy in the truck was probably thinking, "if I can't have one, then no one can," just like a two year old child. If that is the case, the guy is a complete asshat. I hope karma pays him a nice visit, and he gets what he deserves.

    Yup, must by my problem...

scare   /skɛər/ Show Spelled [skair] Show IPA verb, scared, scar?ing, noun
    verb (used with object)
    1. to fill, especially suddenly, with fear or terror; frighten; alarm.

In my way of thinking if it's scaring you, the lesson of which you wrote is already underway.

    On a sadder note...

It seems Ndamukong Suh went to the same driving school as the rest of the clowns in this thread.
A witness named "Allan" spoke to KGW and said that the driver "floored it" when the stoplight at 3rd and Burnside turned green. The witness said that it looked as if Suh was trying to "show off" with screeching tires
It's sadder not because it's Suh, but because of his ride, a '70 Chevelle SS, one of my personal favs.

I really don't need a definition of scare.

But your way of thinking is kind of what I was implying.

My Ranger was my first vehicle. I was young and had very little experience. As I progressed in vehicle performance levels, I had to push my skills beyond the comfort zone and grow them to a new level. You do that through experience. The initial learning curve can be quite steep and almost instantaneous when you are pushing the limits of you so you can find the limits of your car. The Ranger caught me off guard because my experience level was so low. The first time it happened, I learned quickly how it behaved and how to avoid it in the future. The second time it happened, I tried to stop it and learned. That second time it still got away from me because I did not correct enough early enough. Now though, I can catch a skid and drive that Ranger sideways up the street if I want because I learned the hard way how to catch and control the slide to get to a point where I can recover control. The easy way would have been to do it on a race track or in a deserted parking lot of something where the risk of damage to self, vehicle, property and others was kept to a minimum.

Public streets are not the place to do that. If you are scared of driving, scared of your car and unsure of your skills to operate a motor vehicle within the confines of the law, you shouldn't be driving. On a race track, I'd expect you to be scared at first. But I'd expect you to learn and grow your skill set to meet the level of the car and eventually become a better driver.
