I look at the business and actually it does make sense to stop cd's. I'm willing to go on record of predicting the end of cd's by 2013.
I think movies will go the same way maybe by 2014.

But for all of us who still by cd's , this is nice , we get to hang on for a little longer.

Why would it make sense if they still sell? They are very cheap to produce, half of them don't even come with plastic cases anymore, just paperboard sleeves.

These are exactly the points I brought up. Thanks for the update on the hogwash Jesse.

"The piece was poorly written, and named no expert sources (beyond its own "chief editor"), but that didn't stop it spreading faster than the "FENTOOOON!" meme."

"The writer claimed that he'd contacted EMI, Universal and Sony, all of whom "declined to comment". Which is a puzzle, because when I tried to get a comment from a major label it took precisely 30 seconds for them to reply saying the whole thing was "nonsense"."

Taken from a recent Audioholics reply regarding "Club Polk" and Polk speakers:
"I'm yet to hear a Polk speaker that merits more than a sentence and 60 seconds discussion." :\
My response is: If you need 60 seconds to respond in one sentence, you probably should't be evaluating Polk speakers.....

Or just "The End of the World!"? Because if the World ends, then so will CDs, right? lol

I'm not exactly sure what they used between Edison and vinyl, but vinyl LP's as we know them have been produced for 60 years.

And you think they will stop producing CD's in 2014 ?????? Really ??????

They used shellac, which is a resinous secretion of the "lac" (or "lacca") bug - and soluble in alcohol (ethanol).

If your old enough, you guys remember those 78's that had pictures on the record itself ? Kinda like the jacket only embedded on the record. Those have to be worth some coin these days I imagine.

Meanwhile, SACD is having possibly the format's biggest year in terms of numbers of new releases.

Another great point. From the great SRV SACD's from MOFI, to all those Japanese SACD's being released (which are great but I wish they were priced a little lower), and many others, it has been a very good year for the SACD format... :loneranger:

And MoFi just announced new SACD releases next year for Miles Davis, Dylan, Billy Joel, and the Beach Boys.

Like Wal-Mart, they probably feel the floor space taken up by physical media is better used for something they can turn a bigger profit on.

CD's are going away? In the land of flashing vcr clocks? I don't think so. They may go away when (as usual) the baby booms decide they've had enough, but that won't happen as long as the most important downloads in a boomer's life are still the all so important one first thing in the morning, and that lucky Viagra one.

I'm going on what I see in the field. Most of my customers purchase their music from iTunes and stream it around their house. They use iPods to workout , connect to their cars etc. Kids don't buy Cd's , they buy from iTunes.
Media servers , HD recording on line like www.hdtracks.com are becoming a better way to buy music and replay at home. CD's beed around since the late 70's early 80's and I feel honestly it''s time for something new and better quality.
Cd player sales are down to almost a dead stop. Most of our new 2 channel systems use Media servers , Computers built for this or a Sonos , Bryston Streamer etc. Most people don't even want to buy a high end cd player for their high end rig anymore. They rather have a hard drive.

Don't get me wrong , I still buy CD's that I want the highest quality. Most of my general listening is iTunes with music that I work out to , drive to etc. Only my sit down listening is CD anymore. When I figure out what I'm gonna play HD tracks with , most likely a Mac Mini , I will no longer purchase CD's.

I gotta a question for all of you who still want to use the CD format, why?
If you can store all your music in one place , take up about a 12 inch or less square space , have access to all your music with a OSD or a App on your Smart phone Tablet etc , get the same or better quality in replay , have all the artwork , written notes from the artist at your finger tips , what makes you hold on?

    Because, hardware fails.

Media sticks around, is stable and tangible.

And your "customer base" that you are basing your thoughts on? They are a minority in the marketplace. Why? One, they have the money to pay someone like you to come in to their house and do it for them. Two, they have the money to BUY the gear in the first place. The vast majority of people out there do not have those resources available to them. Most here don't have that level of resources available to them. Most here can do for themselves out of a desire to have what they can't afford and the necessity to learn because they can't afford professional services.

Also, I'll break it down for you this way. The last CD I bought is from Gretchen Lieberum called "siren songs". On this CD, there are 11 songs. If I bought this album on iTunes it would have cost me $.99 each plus taxes and fees. It would have been about $12 in total. That's just for standard MP3 quality. It's more for the higher quality and/or lossless rips. I paid $9 at Amazon.com with free super saver shipping and no sales tax. I also have high quiality digital copies of this entire CD on my media server and my phone. I can use my digital copies in any device/system I want because I don't have to deal with DRM.

But hey, you know all that already, don'tcha. 'Cause you know, you can see the future in your personal quest to save the world from bad audio (with iTunes digital formats) one thread at a time.

Yeah, I'll keep buying CD's and running screaming from anything that has to do with Apple/Steve Jobs.
