On my free time I like to visit either the real schlock stores or the Goodwill/Thirft type of stores. Now in one of these stores had and I'm not joking here but a pile of slider equilizers of evey make and model from Kenwood ,SAE,
Pioneer and to many to name. So the question goes out ,are these things aviable piece of gear in an already congested rack of mine and how much tweeking would you ever be satified.I know they were big in the 80's and that was Boses' mantra of having to much stuff and not knowing what to do w/it.
My 2chl system Acom gfa55>Onkyo P301 pre>Infinity SM112S>dENON1940ci cdp
my H/T-Yamaha rx-v665>Klipsch 500set w/8in sub>Yamaha YSD-11 Dock w/3rd gen i-pod>Sony sec335 5disc carosel player>Tosiba bdx2200blu/ray >Tosiba au37 h/d tv.I also get i-net radio from my computer into audio 1 of the Yamaha and it works great. Also source is cable vision which I might dump for Vios after hearing some pros and cons of both of these systems posting another point.

Now I can play 2chl totally seperate w/ any of the preiferals except the blu/ray Also I can play all devices through the avr audio out to tuner on the Onkyo and all this works fine.To clear this up to play CDs I push cd on the Onkyo.
To get i-net radio I use the tuner button and the same w/ the carosel. The only thing that bumms me out is that the Sony is 10 yrs old and works great but the remote does not have a power on button or a tray open function.
Yes I'm 1 lazy **** but then again I'am disabled and the less I have to walk the better.

The problem with equalizers is they add dozens and dozens of generally low quality (and noisy) electronic components into your signal path.

I like as pure a signal path as possible and personally don't even like components with a single "tone" control.

I remember back in the day Klark Teknik made an awesome eq. Does anyone remember White Instruments eqs?

LW - just in case you weren't aware (or didn't know how), if you goto the top of the screen here, and click on "Settings" > look on the left side of the page and you will see "Edit Signature" under the my settings box.

This is where you can add your list of equipment. I've seen quite a few posts where you list everything out - this should save you quite a bit of time (and people can still see your list in case you don't provide it sometime)

    Just a heads up

Next time you're there, pick one up for $5, stick it in your rig and see what you think yourself.

You'd really need a pink noise generator and a good mic to use one prorperly, and that's assuming it is of good enough quality to make fine adjustments without effecting other bands. This is where parametric equalizer's come in. Most consumer EQ's were basically eye-candy, sans possibly offerings from SAE (parametric) and some Soundcraftsmen models.

I can not agree more with you! I am the same way and I know my staff since I work in electronics for many years. I have build many integrated amplifiers and I never use tone controls. I want to listen to the music the same way it was recordered no matter what!!!. The more garbage you put in the signal path....the more garbage you going to get out!!!. But many people like to play with the "nice" leds making them as mountains lol even though they do not even know what they are doing with the EQ. I have seen people that have one channel different setup than the other channel in the EQ.

Keep in mind, every potentiometer, switch, circuit, component, miles of wire, solder joint, and connection you add to a system, is another layer of grunge the original signal has to navigate thru. For best results, keep it simple.

    Just a thought.

Perhaps to compensate for imperfect room treatments and furniture placement like I have in my house. I use a ADC Soundshaper III-C Paraequalizer for just that reason and it is extremely quiet and corrects my room anomolies perfectly. That's exactly what they were designed for in the first place and why almost all of them have two channels of control.

To me the best EQ is .....NONE!. I guess people are still using the balance control to adjust the distance from speakers to the sweet spot and EQ to increase some db in some frequencies. in my case I would work with the furnitures and speakers placement better!
I guess That is why the real HI-FI gurus NEVER use EQ's.

The real Hi-fi gurus have hundreds of thousands of dollars to spend on equipment, room treatments, and new houses so that they can get the furniture perfectly placed so they don't need any electronic compensation. If you can live without them, good for you. Try to be a little less condescending to those that do oh great guru of sound lanchile!!
