Outside of the fact that there is speculation about particles that may be faster than light(not proven yet) I see no point to the joke. The joke is that the punch line arrives before the set-up. If something can travel faster than light, it could arrive to you before you saw it leave (i.e. a catcher would catch a baseball thrown at faster than the speed of light before he saw it leave the pitchers hand). -
