Can a mid-level AVR drive MMGs?

Simply put. Denon AVR1611 driving MMGs. What can I expect? I plan to upgrade to an AVR with preouts in the future but will this setup work in the meantime?

So long as you don't push it, you should be fine in the short term, but also do not expect to really be able to enjoy much from the speakers until you upgrade your power. They are really lifeless unless they see plenty of good quality amplification.

Thanks, J. Do you think the same would hold true for Martin Logan Electromotions? I've read that they're more mid-level avr friendly and don't necessarily need external amplification to sound good. Supposedly that's how they were designed. I could be wrong.

My guess would be a definite yes, the Martin Logan should be easy to drive. The Logan's are 6 Ohm 91dB sensitivity and the MMG's are 4Ohm 86dB sensitivity. You should be able to drive the Logan's with half the power required by the MMG's. Not to say you don't want more (pre-outs + amp) but they will be easier to drive with a receiver.

Check your manual, most mid level avr's may not be stable under 8ohms and even if they can u won't get the sound the speakers are known for .
