Can you encode track data in FLAC

I am working on a digital library of music and saved a few files as WAV using Exact Audio Copy software I learned about on this forum. I did not realize that you cannot encode track data with a WAV file.

I have also heard of FLAC and wanted to know if that format allows you to add track data (such as you would find in an MP3).

Thanks,

Mike

Yes, it's called ID3 tagging and you can't do that with .WAV files but you can for FLAC and almost, if not all other formats.

Excellent. thank you. I only tried one album in WAV so I have not invested a lot of time. I'll be doing the rest in FLAC

FLAC is cool. It's 100% lossless, but about 1/2 the size of WAV's. I remember when SHN was the only lossless compression method; FLAC is only better than SHN (shorten) because the files can be smaller, and nowadays most players don't come with native SHN support.

Since you're new to FLAC, I'll point out something that a lot of people get confused about:

There are different compression settings for FLAC that create different bit-rate files. For redbook sample rates they can be as low as 500kbps (smaller file), or as high as 1200kbps (larger file). Here's the important part: the higher bit-rate, larger files are not of a higher quality.

Lossless is lossless. Period. It's more processor intensive, and takes longer, to compress them to a smaller size, so actually, the lower bit-rate files could be more desirable if you're short on hard drive space.

It's a toss-up. Fast compression and large file or slow compression and small file. If you have a fast processor, then you can have both.

    Cheers,

    Ben

    just fyi, I have some 192khz @ 24 bit FLAC's that have bit-rate of 4700kbps!
