I'm going for the Inductor Upgrade!

Hey guys, I'm going to do the inductor upgrade on my SDA-2B TL's.

As always, I just wanted to confirm a few things, and ask some questions before I get started.

I'm going to need the 16 mH, 10 Ga. from Solen correct? I'm in Southern California, can anybody recommend a place nearby to order from? If not, I guess the next best thing is www.partsconnexion.com.

Is there a thread out there that I'm missing that has some instructions on installing these big guys in 2B's? Would be immensely helpful.

I used a 15 mH Erse Super Q from Parts Express in my 2B TL's. They are available in 15 or 17 mH and I went with 15 at the suggestion of the forum. They made a very noticeable improvement in bass.

Just use a hammer to install it.. If one can't use a drill and file to install a set of rings I suggest you save the $400 and put it to upgrading your gear!!

Just my .02 or you could always use a hammer!!!

I felt that $70 was a bargain! Even I was able to make these work. No problems at all except the bracing in one speaker was out of line. Hey I did use a hammer!!

Make sure you have a nailgun, giant air compressor and 16C spikes on hand.

And remember no matter what, it won't make a sonic difference when you are done.

P.S.: make sure you tell Parts Express the inductors should only cost $5.

I was giving the guy a hard time gentlemen, which is what he does to me very often! The rings are fine and dandy, I'm in audio heaven and cellos sound like they're right in front of me! Absolutely spectacular. The ghost of Miles Davis appeared after installation, it was the freakiest thing I've ever seen.

I gotta say; it kinda appears like every body may hate him. For discussion boards it seems pretty ridiculous for things to turn into a discussion like this one. What has anyone learned from this; the only thing I got from it is that there appear to be a lot of smart asses here. No pokes at anyone but is this what the Club Polk community wants from its members? I can get this at home with my kids.

Oliver, the OP has made his bed, now he needs to lay down and enjoy it. Information is shared and help is given to those that deserve it. The OP has been nothing but passive/aggressive and confrontational on many subjects. In my book there is back and forth and then there is someone who is being a dumbass and then expects all of us to help him out. Sorry, but for me, it doesn't work that way.

Hate is a strong word, I don't hate anyone here, but with his passive/aggressive posts of the past, all his nonsense, name calling, posturing, etc. I am not inclined to help. I'm sure the answer is here somewhere as it's a common question. Or pehaps others who know the answer and don't have issues with him can help.

Not to mention that when you do offer help, he goes and does his own thing, makes mistakes, and then comes back asking for more advice. And then when you point out that he didn't listen the first time, you're a jackass.

I thought you were selling these speakers? And then keeping them? And then selling them again? And then keeping them again? And now you're upgrading them again. I guess next you're selling them again? And then let me guess - you'll be keeping them?
Good music, a good source, and good power can make SDA's sing. Tubes make them dance.

It's not even a punishment, I'm just not inclined to help on this particular subject with this particular OP. There is a lot of knowledge here as well as this subject being covered before so I'm sure in the end the OP will find what he's looking for. As usual, it will be interesting to see how it all plays out.

This is a fine established forum about speakers and all things related to audio. It even has areas such as home theater, classifieds, pictures of stuff, and even a clubhouse to chat. In this we sometimes go off target and talk about wives, beer, hurricanes. But really we are hear to share information and am as I am doing naturally finding camaraderie in sharing love of audio. Not everyone enjoys it as much as we do so it's nice to make friends at the same time as learning or teaching others about this forum and what it can do for you. So this is not a playground for yahoos to treat like a fraternity out of control. Some rules and manners should apply. The only time I've seen elders say anything negative it's because someone has rudely challenged the very basics of what is being said with no real goal in mind other than to be a real pain around the backside. I deal with people like this everyday unfortunately. This is the type of person you hold the door for at the post office and they simply walk in without a word of thanks or even a nod of acknowledgement as if you are there to serve them. Even more unfortunate is this is the same person who will ask for help and if given will then blame you for it not going right. This is a person who has a fundamental personality trait that will not change over time.

So waste not one wrinkle on the forehead or one shred of care over this one. It's a shame though, because there was some really good stuff on that other thread worthy of linking to someone new but it is cluttered with that garbage of hostility.

I have rings coming soon and will give a proper review then. I will try and paste some of the informative information to that thread so it is usable by people coming to this forum for the right reasons.

Sorry to totally take a dump on your thread OP, good luck. You have lots of good information from which to find your answers. I've been using google back to this forum and have found lots of good information.

You're not the first one to notice. I continually get PM's from strangers who are afraid to speak up to the pack of wolves around here (no one in this thread of course). To which I say, it's all good. I'll waste my energy elsewhere. In fact, I had a blast explaining to my wife how I've managed to piss everybody off around here just being myself and she laughed and said that I had that effect on people. There are some guys that really can't stand my light-heartedness and take it the wrong way but that's fine. I've made the mistake of asking to many questions and not taking everyone's advice as gospel-truth which some are still **** about obviously. But that's what I'm here for, to learn. I have and will. Period.

I'm just going to have to dig up the info the hard way which is fine. Thanks to all who offered advice and didn't cower away from the forum peer pressure.

I mounted my Solens on the floor of the cabinet.

Here's how I did it: I epoxied four 1/2" plywood footers to the floor using #10 brass wood screws. I cut a piece of 1/4" plywood a little larger than the inductors, traced the inner and outer dimensions of the inductor onto it, and drilled holes for 4 heavy duty Nylon zip ties evenly spaced around the outer dimension. I ran the zip ties through the holes and, using the same brass screws, fixed the plywood to the footers. Then I mounted the Inductors on the plywood and secured them with the Zip ties.

The ties are rated for 175 lbs. each so those inductors are gonna stay put, and they have no magnetic interaction.

Wish I had a camera to show the above, but I don't so you'll have to use your imagination.

    Good luck with that.
