And not to derail this thread, but I just bought a pair of Monitor 70 series II and was wondering if my Technics su-g90 receiver would have any issues powering them.
I have looked all over and cant seem to find the specs on it.

I've had this for about 12 years running my Technics SB-SL701's.


I've just decided now that Im going to start building up my home stereo so Im trying to increase my knowledge base.

I've been a fan of the good(vintage) Polk car audio stuff forever so I'm not a complete newb. :biggrin:

The reason i want to go with my preamp/amp combo is because, although i like my speakers, one day id like to move up to the Rti series, and i wanna have some power going to them when i do get them. I know alot of people say to just jump to the Lsi, but i am not a big fan of them, ive listen to both, and i love the Rti sound.

Matthew Polk's speakers are hard to part with....and you won,t have to spend (8g's...an Analogy)... for just one too get great sound...well built,great looking speakers....The guy knows his speakers...There is no way in hell i would spend 6g's for one speaker..bet you won,t need a Large Microscope too see that price tag..lolo..

I have:
Onkyo 808 135w/ch
MonitorII 70 front
CS2 center
MonitorII 40 rear
Velodyne sub 12" 200w/rms 25hz

Getting a good sub should be your first purchase, Audyssey set all my speakers to 40hz.
after months of trying different settings, I manual set the receiver to 80hz for the
center and rears, setting the 70's to 60hz worked best for me and let the sub handle
the lows below 80hz. This made a huge improvement in quality and volume as it focuses
the receivers power to these higher ranges and the Polks perform much better!
I an very happy with my setup now and it is sufficient for my needs and taste. I put off
looking into buying external amps (for now.) Obviously separate amps would be the best
route to go to get the best sound from the Polks.. but try tweaking your settings and you
may not have to buy amps to suit your needs and to get the best performance out of
your current system..

I was using a H/K 3390 to power monitor 50's and it worked fine and i was happy. Then i had the chance to buy a pair of 70's for a steal and the 3390 sounded muddy, and tinny at the same time. So i though push them all the way and polk claim they can take 275w a piece. I had some hands on experience with a Cerwin Vega CV-900 amp and was pleased so i gave it a shot. It puts of 900w max. 210w per channel at 8ohms so at over 200 i figured it should be enough. Boy was i right, the 70's sound unbelievable, through on Frank Sinatra At The Sands and you are there. The 70's sound clearer and more open than my AKG K702's and my Sennheiser HD650's. So from my experience the 70's are definitely power hungry, and they definitely open up when powered well.
