Help, I can't stop spending money!

My Polk addiction started when I decided to toss my old Sony center channel and get something that I didn't have to crank up the volume on to hear dialogue on quieter movies. I picked up a CS20 from Newegg and was very happy with it, it made the Sony sound like it was underwater.

This made me unhappy with my ~7 year old Sony tower speakers that I had been happy with until that point in time. They suddenly sounded so dead to me. So I sprung for some RTi12s from Polk Direct.

After tripping and nearly being crushed by an RTi12 while hauling it into my house, I was happy... until I wanted an amp as my Onkyo NR708 couldn't keep up with the speakers in heavy surround sound scenes. So I bought a used Adcom GFA-5500.

Sadly, these two purchases made me start wanting to replace the CS20 that started this entire cycle. So I bought a CSi5. It got here today. It sounds so much nicer than the CS20 it makes me depressed, and it's not even broken in yet.

Now I keep wondering what my 7.1 setup would sound like with some RTi A7's for surrounds and some A3's for rear surrounds... then I realized I'd need another amp to drive the A7's, or put the Adcom on the A7's and get something more powerful for the RTi12's.

At this point my home theater system is worth more than the vehicles I own. Is there some kind of medication I can take that can stop this craving?

I'm glad my wife and I no longer share a residence because if I wasn't on the road to divorce before I would be now. ;)

Do what makes you happy. If you want a woman in your life, find one that you can gel with, and is ok with what makes you happy. I never understand posts from guys selling gear due to waf.

My girl knows what blows my skirt up, and seeing me enjoy it and share it ends up blowing her skirt up too. That's how it works.

    Dr. Phil out.
Check your lips at the door woman. Shake your hips like battleships. Yeah, all the white girls trip when I sing at Sunday service.

Nah, woman moved out before I started this spending spree. I'm going to have to satiate my desire to improve this with a few acoustic treatments I already have most of the materials for I guess.

And no, I'd not sell my stuff to keep some woman happy. Perhaps that's why she no longer lives here. ;)

So this has kind of, like, become your woman.:tongue:

I'm not a fan of towers for surrounds... I'd go with FXis... they're awesome!

Pretty much, but she always sounds sweet, never gives me much trouble, doesn't throw stuff at me or hit me with frying pans, and best of all has a mute button!

I have my old Sony towers as surrounds, and I like having a nice big speaker there, though for the rears not so much. I've actually considered buying aftermarket tweeters for the Sony towers to see if it makes a cheap improvement, but I have no idea what the crossover frequency is.

Sure, if you have audio equipment for sale. ;) I'm pondering an amp for the CSi5 now, since it made such a difference on the RTi12's. Damn disease!

No LSi's for me... I'm mostly home theater. I've not heard them and don't want to hear them -- in case I like them. ;)

I like the crystal clarity from the RTi's, and I rarely listen to more than 2-3 songs in a row of music before I get bored. I was playing Floyd's "Dark Side Of The Moon" on SACD last night and it was pretty dang cool.

congrats on awesome surround system... you need to find a girl who shares your taste in movies - it would suck if she's watching national geographic documentaries while you're pining away for watching another remake of the bourne ultraconspiracy

    i'm just sayin...

LOL....then you would LOVE the LSi's. But if you dont have a dedicated amp they are a no go. And if you do, then your going to pull more wattage out of it than w/ your RTi's so its like a free wattage upgrade

I have an Adcom GFA-5500 that I'm about to rig some quiet fans I have laying around (120mm fans from a PC case). I bought a instant-read infrared thermometer and the left heatsink is running 110F and the right is running 120F with little load on it. Sucker is hot with an 8ohm load, I'd hate to see the heat output under a 4ohm load like the LSi's!

I'd like to hear music on a lot of people's systems that hang around here... I wish I could find "The Wall" on SACD though.

Yeah don't make me mention subs... the RTi12's hit 30hz pretty easy so if I want a decent sub I'll probably end up being out at least a grand...

I've been on the 'net or BBS'es in one form or another for two thirds of my life. My attention span isn't that great because of it. I have a HTPC hooked up to my surround sound system, it's been known for me to take 3-4 hours to watch one episode of a TV show because I get to a boring part and wander off on the web or e-mail or something and forget what I was doing!

Sounds like me. I'm happy that my girl understand the "boys and their toys" need. She at least is into it so we both enjoy the end result. But my gosh I have to stop too... I'm in the process of building my car which is now post-poned till next year.

The sky is the limit with this hobby. I have found there is always something else that sparks your interest and makes you put your current speakers up for sale.

I feel your pain, I want to upgrade all the time, my wife is ok with the HT purchase thats why my signature says wife approved, she loves watching and listening to Movies through them Polks in fact she encouraged me on the purchase bless her heart. I butt heads with her on my 20 some Cd's or more a month purchase, not to mention the Lp's I find and buy all the time. I have to sneak them in the house to avoid the bickering, she always finds out when she wants to listen to something and sees the stacks of my most recent purchases, that need to be filed alphabeticly, If I had the money that I spend on tunes to make a gear upgrade I would be the proud owner of a couple of pair of LSi's and something decent to push them with, I do have a pair of Rti'a9s ,and a new Pioneer Elite on my wish list, now only if I could curb my appetite for new tunes.

Just don't break out the credit card very often to purchase audio gear and you'll be just fine.
Most people just listen to music and watch movies. I EXPERIENCE them.

Didn't think I'd get people so inflamed on this subject. :)

Thankfully, I have no credit cards. I figured out about 5 years ago that I buy things when I'm upset or depressed. So now I live only within my means. Sometimes that means I eat a lot of ramen noodles and PBJ for a week or so but that's as far as it goes.

My wife was only my wife for 3 years. Our breakup was less about Home Theater and more about her marrying me because she wanted more income and someone to help take care of her kids. After the first 3 months she was sleeping in a separate bed. So I hope no one is looking at me as the "ideal" of some guy who ditched his wife over his love of his HT, I'm more a perfect example of sucker than anything. ;)

I'd say you show great promise. Far better to buy audio gear than waste coin on necessacities which you buy use up and then have to buy more of.

Enjoy the fun of your HT.

Problem is the money. I need to move someplace with a basement room that allows me to enjoy it, but that costs money too.

Maybe someday I'll get an insurance settlement from the insurance company of the guy that t-boned the car I was riding in. Then I could move and get more AV stuff. ;)
