How much would you value a used set of Maggie SMG's at? Look to be in decent condition, current bid at 150 and local to me......

Worth a look and possible bid?

They look to be in working condition. Anyone know if you can replace the brown socks with black ones like the current MMG's?
Pair of original Magnepan Magneplaner Model 4-ohm SMG floor-standing speakers, circa early 1980s, in excellent working condition, in their original box. Four feet tall by two feet wide by one-and-three-fourths inches deep. In remakably good cosmetic condition and sound great. Includes stands and shipping slipcover. Can be picked up locally to avoid shipping charges.

Not worth it IMHO... too much to go wrong with them, inculding delamination of the wires from the mylar film.

Delamination is definitely a problem on these old Maggies. The new ones really don't have the problem from what I understand. I have been VERY tempted to give the MMG a try!

The MMG is a very nice little speaker... without them, I would be going out of my mind right now. At 600 a pair, they are the best buy in HiFi.

Yeah, I do see some interesting prices on the gon though :)...

Think I will just hold out for a pair of the MMG's when the budget and wife allow

John, you planning to supplement w/ a sub, or no need still at this point?

I've been thinking about picking up a pair of 1.6s, so I've been getting my read on. Would only buy older Maggies if I could check them out in person, and even then I'd be very wary. Would definitely have to factor the costs of repair into the decision.

On the other hand, it's only a buck-fifty. I've lost more on a poker hand.....

As long as you can hear them, buying old Magnepan is not as risky as you guys think. I've owned about a dozen vintage pairs with no problems. De-lamination is a <1990 issue at best from my experience.

In regards to that model @ $150....not a pair I'd suggest since you can find more recent SMG models for not much more. If they have the brown/tan fabric, I usually avoid it unless they're a larger model worth the effort. My largest pair aside from the 3.5R was the Tympani IIID at 3' x 6' each side.
CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

The Tympani are amazing, and worth the effort to get and restore.
