WOW. national taxes on purchased goods. That's pretty radical. But there are tons are benefits to the Canadian system. FYI a good read is "Differences That Matter: Social Policy and the Working Poor in the United States and Canada" by Dan Zuberi, a sociologist. Although not unbiasied (I mean what is right cnh?) it really brings to light the benefits of the Canadian system. My students were VERY offended by this book! America's always better right?

I've heard of this work but have not read it but am familiar with similar arguments as a social scientist, myself. You'll never hear me say that America has done 'everything' right. I have no problems with our Canadian friends and their system. And spent a year in China teaching and studying its system. Because we are currently engaged in an awkward trade situation and have residual 'cold war' sentiments, and, let's face it, the Chinese Gov't does have its problems, we will continue to laud American Democracy even when it doesn't work. When we can't talk to each other, agree about anything or get anything done--dysfunctionalism? And where the only thing we're really worried about is OUR party and the next election and whether or not 'we' are in power?

What has America come to? Maybe we should ask our cousins up North! lol

It's all relative to what the total cost of living is in a state. Some have low sales tax but ridiculous income taxes. In MD, there's county & in some places local income taxes added.

Also, wages vary tremendously by location....

It's all those taxes in Canada that allow them to have universal health care. It's got to come from somewhere.

You are correct. However, health care is not exactly universal. IE: In Quebec Healthcare is mandatory and part of the income tax system however, when I was in Ontario it was volunteer, you would buy your share in the system just like any other insurance however, I believe it was government controlled. I am not sure it is still that way as I believe the ROC shares some form of universal healthcare system which the funds are administered by the Federal ( the federal distribute the funds to the provinces). My the system is not perfect and even struggling in the ROC I believe the ROC provides better services than in Quebec.

IMHO, goods and services taxes would be the best way to finance a society's welfare. Eliminate income taxes, property taxes and so on, have tight control on all goods coming in to your country, have serious tax on everything that is considered luxury. That way the richer pay their fare share without tax evasions while the poor are still provided proper welfare but according to their own means. Here in Canada, the middle class is the big target and payer, pays for the poor and the rich thus the middle class getting poorer.

I have a friend in Ontario, and what they have up there that we don't, is lots of Walk-in-Clinics. If she is having a minor problem, she just goes to her nearest clinic, shows her Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) card, and she gets taken care of.

If it is something that requires a specialist, she gets a referral to one.

As of today, we pay 8.625% (I guess someone had to come up with a number that sounded better than 9?)

No tax on groceries, but any prepared food, like those rotisserie chickens a lot of supermarkets have, is taxed. And, while we have NY State Income Tax, we also seem to pay a lot more for gasoline than neighboring states.

Don't even ask about property taxes here, it can be very tough to own a home on LI unless you're a teacher or work in law enforcement.
So, are you willing to put forth a little effort or are you happy sitting in your skeptical poo pile?

Yes OHIP and the walk in clinics are great in Ontario. We also have clinics in Quebec but they are not walk in, you must be a patient of one of the doctors of that clinic (and many do not have family doctors in Quebec as they already have too many patients).

Hmm, when did it change that we pay taxes on groceries in Texas. I don't do much grocery shopping but the last reciept I looked at had a taxed total and un taxed total?

Also, tax rates vary here. The state has a set portion but the county and city will add onto that tax rate. For me it is 8.25% local. 20 miles down the road it jumps to 8.5% and as I get closer to Dallas some of the rates are 8.75%

Alaska's state sales tax is... 0%
Alaska's state income tax is... 0%

However, local municipalities are allowed and will impose a sales tax on purchases made in that municipality.

There are trade offs. Most products can cost you far more in their purchase price than they would down in the states even with a sales tax. And shipping? Let's not go there.

No sales tax in Oregon, but income tax is 9%. On one hand shopping centers don't get abandoned in 10 years as in other states as developers push into lower tax (outside city limits) zones. But, the pendulum swings on the state budget can get a bit extreme. It's a two-leg versus three leg stool stability issue.

8.2% sales tax in Vancouver, WA area. If you are buying a high dollar item here some people get a little sneaky and go to Portland, OR and save the tax.

    No State taxes in WA.

When you tax more, people will go out of their way to avoid paying them.

I did some shopping last night for BBQ food for the 4th. Took a look at the receipt to see how much tax I paid on the groceries, $0, no tax on food. I didn't even pay tax on the chips. I guess they are considered food.

It does get a bit weird here on food vs snacks. Peanuts are food, beer nuts are a non food or snack item. Water, even the flavored and bubbly kind is a food, soda (and beer) are is not.

Just an update about the comment of paying tax on groceries in Texas.
