Father's Day is Sunday, what's the best piece of advice pops passed on to you?

My dad, it's a cliche but it's true. "If it's too good to be true, it probably is."

Not that he was trying to be excessively skeptical or anything. It really just means that you shouldn't be a patsy. Look farther than the flashy outside. Healthy skepticism is good thing and can often keep you from making a decision you'll regret in the future.

Do I always listen? No, not always but we're all human.

So what sage wisdom (deliberately or inadvertently) did your dad pass (deliberately or inadvertently) on to you?

"Have as much fun as you can at weddings because the first 5 years out of college those are the only things you will attend"

Thank god I moved 1000 miles from "home" as I've gotten to skip quite a few weddings I wouldn't have wanted to be at anyways.

Never 'expect' anybody (you work for or with) to tell you that 'you' have done something well, or better than they could!

    1. Because most people are 'envious' and

    2. Because most people are insecure and unsure of themselves, doubt themselves constantly. So how can 'you' expect 'them' not to doubt you?

In essence, do your best and don't wait around for 'anyone' to praise you or reward you. Because it doesn't mean anything and you can't 'trust' their opinion because they can't trust themselves.

    Pretty sage advice, I'd say!

My father died 3 years ago. As far as I know few people 'ever' told him he'd done something well! What a wonderful world we live in!

In telling me that he had decided to help me through college two years after I failed miserably at my first attempt, My Dad, who I had NEVER heard curse, took me outside (I later realized that he probably wanted to be out of Mom's earshot) and told me, "All right, I'll help out." I replied as graciously as I could, but he just stared at me. I'll never forget his next words... "Don't F... Up."

I've never known my dad, actually, this thread made me remember that I've had his phone number that I got from his sister in my desk for about a year now.. Surprise call? IDK about that.

Some of the best 'fatherly' advice I had ever received was - 'Remember, there are going to be only two or three times in your life to be upset about something, the other stuff don't worry about.' - Its served me very well, don't sweat the small stuff so to speak.

My dad always used the bible for thoughts. "Do unto other as you would have them do unto you".

My mom had the gem though via Abraham Lincoln. "It is better to remain silent and thought a fool, then to speak an remove all doubt". That is a pearl of a saying.

When I was a teenager I used to work for my dad in his construction business. One day he told me "Boy, you better get a job in the air conditioning 'cause you ain't gonna make it out here." After a few other jobs I took it to heart and have been in IT for the last 15 years.
