Yea the upfront start up cost is kind of pricy. By the time you buy all the equipment you need. Once your established and have the cargers, batteries and other gear it isnt so bad. Parts aren't super expensive and the savage is pretty tough.

You can get in to it pretty cheap too. Going with the names big on racing like Losi, Team Associated, Traxxas and so on, the RTR's (Ready To Run) are expensive. But you can get a Tamiya kit with a full set of electronics and a transmitter for around $400-450. Yeah, still pricey but if you get a kit separate and then buy the electronics, you'll spend at least $100 more.

But be careful, this a big bug that bites hard! I started out with little Tyco stuff like Turbo Hoppers, Bandits and Outlaws. Then I got in to racing with Losi products meant for entry level and it went south from there. Now I have a peg board in the basement with 5 chassis and multiple bodies hanging from it as well as drawers of electronics, batteries and radio equipment.

It can be expensive but it's also an absolute BLAST!

The best idea is to check local hobby shops for used gear.
There's one here in DFW that has a website with their own flea
market. They also have used gear at the shop. With a bit of work,
some of these used deals can be up and running with just a little know how
and you can save a lot of $$$$. My biggest issue is the local tracks don't stay open past 6pm during the week, so there's little practice/debug time.
Up North, there were places that were open until 10 or 11pm during
    weeknights.

You're lucky you at least have places. The closest track to me now is a 45 minute drive. When I was younger and actively racing, the closest track was a mile and a half up the street. The closest indoor track was about 5 miles away.

Now, testing and tuning happens in the cul de sac I live on and racing is a rarity replaced mostly with just banging around the woods or back in the discarded sand pits behind the baseball field at the end of the block.

This looks like an awesome hobby but i wouldn't even know where to start as I don't have a hobby shop around here for something like that. Looks like it can get expensive :frown:

I had the Turbo Hopper as an older kid. That car was blast, and was pretty fast. Wish I still had mine.

I'm not but apparently my neighbor is. He spent the last month or so carving out a track in his back yard. It was big enough that at first I thought it was a dirt bike track. I was relieved to find out it was an RC track, much less noisy. I'll try to get a pic up in the next day or two.

Here they are. It's funny, they were hot and heavy on the track for the first couple of weeks and then it's been quiet. Which is exactly what his wife said would happen.
