ahhh, that just makes you smile, doesn't it? Makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside just thinking about all the donations you are making to benefit these disadvantaged, but wholesome individuals.

I don't get it... isn't there a list for heart transplants.. or do we have those things just laying around these days?

My dad is a pancreas and kidney recipient and I feel that he has been very deserving of his gifts. I feel that if someone is in jail and has a condition like this, then it was their fault for being in jail and not ours to pay even more to take care of them.

I hope everyone is an organ donor because it does wonders. I understand if someone isn't as well, but I'm awfully biased towards donating because I've seen the changes for my dad.

I am going to bite my tongue on this . . .

I'm not. This is not right.

I'm self-employed and pay over $18,000 EACH AND EVERY YEAR for out of pocket expenses and a very high-deductible policy that will cover PART of catastrophic illnesses like heart transplants. I would still probably be $20K or more out of pocket if I needed one.

I have to structure expenses and do it this way to make sure I can afford to pay my taxes so I don't go to prison.

I'm about the same age as that crazy NY rapist, and if I needed a heart transplant, even being an upstanding citizen with maybe 3 traffic tickets in almost 40 years of driving, a father of 4 and an owner of two businesses, I'll bet I would be VERY LOW on the list of eligible recipients.

Prisoners, Politicians and Welfare Entitlement Recipients I'm sure are ahead of me.

I guess my best bet would be to stop paying taxes and go to prison so I'm eligible for a heart.

    Now ain't that America!

If a society is to be judged by how it treats its least fortunate, then this society is doomed.

Also, if you're bothered to RTFA, you would see that the "victim's" own sister doesn't believe her and thinks the guy is innocent. Smells funny to me. Different story if it was someone on the guy's side, but her own sister doesn't believe her? Now, why could that be? But, you know, don't bother to consider any of that. Just carry on with your hate and self-righteous indignation.

Words mean something. Nothing by any member here was written about "society's least fortunate", so I'm not sure how you made that particular leap in verbiage.

Convicted Criminals aren't society's "least fortunate", they are CRIMINALS.

As far as the sister; ever heard of "sibling rivalry"? Do you think a 12-year-old child raped and sodomized herself ????

This was a trial by a jury of his peers who found him guilty, so don't worry about what your nose thousands of miles away is telling you.

Dig up and read the facts of the case, the number of days of trial, and hours of jury deliberation (Pike was convicted at trial in Cayuga County Court in 1996 of first degree rape, first-degree sodomy and third-degree rape for raping and sodomizing a 12-year-old child.)

"The prison system has agreements with hospitals across the state on how much it will pay for various treatments,

The state should agree to pay $182.46 for a complete heart transplant; no more, no less.

That'll take care of that problem.

This is probably the best logic I've seen in this entire thread, but I wonder what loophole he would fall into to still have the procedure done at the taxpayer's expense.

I feel this is one of those letter of the law vs. spirit of the law judgement calls gone wrong. Obviously, those involved are interpreting the letter of the law (probably to avoid being sued...) and following legal protocol. On the other hand, the spirit of the law should make an exception to any protocol and skip this guy for the transplant. Apparently, no one has the stones to do this.

I always try to put myself into the decision-maker's shoes...what would I be more scared of? Public outrage such as ours, or the lawyer's phone call? Sadly, I think our society has gone to the point of being more scared of lawyers than public scorn. I'm not sure when that changed, and I'm pretty sure it goes against a great deal of social psychological theory.

(PS. I have no idea what I would honestly do in the decision-maker's shoes on this one. I agree with everyone here to 'eff em, but I'd hate to jeopardize my own family by losing a job due to a massive lawsuit against the state/prison/hospital by the prisoner's family).

I can tell you what my decision would be:

Feed him a very heart healthy diet for the next two years and hope he makes it to parole... As far as any lawyer? Well, the answer would consist of two words, total letters would be seven...
