Despite his bombastic nature, Beck was right on the money. He is certainly not gone, and his being free from the constraints of Fox News should in no way be seen as the network dropping him. His program was the third highest rated show on cable, and his audience will stand by him...

The problem, at least from what I've heard elsewhere, wasn't his ratings, but the fact that advertisers didn't want to touch him. Ratings don't mean bupkis if you can't get anyone to pay to show you on TV.

And "right on the money?" No. He, like pretty much any talking head, makes good points, but he's also a conspiracy nut and a loony toon.

All conspiracies have BASIS in fact, that's what makes them compelling. It's when you take one fact and spin a complete made-up story out of it that it becomes a conspiracy.

TV news today = complete $hit.
I pretty much change the channel once someone starts giving their opinion on something - b/c who the hell are they?

Glenn Beck is an idiot as well. If not for his 'ideas', but for the way he chooses to 'convey'. I use quotes b/c I use those terms loosely.

But it's fun to watch Jon Stewart lampoon him. :)

That statement is probably more fitting to the regular network news.

I believe Beck and Fox are working on a partnership for something else. Fox didn't dump him, but like you said,if you want to take one fact and spin it, then thats what you get from the regular news outlets....Fox dumped Beck.

Pick your poison in the cable news arena, plenty of shows that cry wolf everyday and spin facts to fit their wolf. Beck has at least done some homework, unlike most others. We all know how the story of the boy who cried Wolf ends.:smile:

I didn't mean to insinuate Beck was alone in this. There are people like him on all sides of the political spectrum. To be clear though, he is not a "news" person, his show is an "opinion" show. Even he wouldn't tell you differently.

He's not going away, and yea, who cares. It's not like he's saying anything that has a basis in fact. I predict that he'll start hitting the bottle soon and disintegrate into the mess he was years ago. Many former addicts who find 'religion' often cling to it for dear life in a very dogmatic way--it goes without saying that many also have persecution complexes.

I didn't watch him much because I can't stomach that kind of stuff, but it is amusing for a few minutes. What was it that Warhol said about 15 minutes of fame--Beck had his and he may have a little more.

Another possibility is that he'll run for President? Not likely, but Fox is slowly letting a number of its people 'go' as they prepare for the big run!

Thats kinda the point, most news outlets today have turned opinionated. I guess they want you to believe there isn't a difference. But you are correct, Becks show is opinion, not a nightly news source.

The thing with regular nightly news is they have time constraints, so you get a glance of the top news stories, but no detail. People turn to cable news for more of a background story to the main news. This is where it gets opinionated, yet they do reveal other facts not brought about on the regular news. Hence the popularity of cable news, even though your mixing additional facts with opinion.

As a side note, even Beck himself will tell you not to take his word as gospel for anything, and encourages others to do their own homework. In general, thats something most people don't like to do...homework. They like others to tell them what to think or believe. Part of the dumbing down of america I guess. If Beck has any value, it's getting people to do their own homework, understand what it all means, spend alittle time to look into things on your own, draw your own conclusions, no matter what side of the walk your on. You would think that would come naturally to most, but it doesn't.

His candidacy would at least make for some very entertaining debates. And he would be the very first of the major talking heads to put his money where his mouth is. And yes... he would have my vote, given the current crop of people. At least he is forthright and honest with his beliefs. I doubt seriously that he would ever cave on his principles. The fact that for the past five years there has been a concerted effort to find the dirt in his personal life that would ruin his career, which has utterly failed to do so means we know who this man is for a change.

I enjoyed Beck a whole lot more when he was on CNN. His POV at that time was more thoughtful and supported with greater facts IMHO. Once he got on FOX, he evolved into a truer far wing talking head. As time went on he would grab minuscule bits of history and blow them into huge events. And when nothing politically interesting was going on he'd redo old show themes.

FOX, I believe had no choice but to let him go. His racist comment about Obama (he later apologized) cost FNC some $600,000 a week in lost advertisers. In addition, many FOX news anchors believed that his views were too extreme and marginalized their straight news efforts. According to reports he will produce news specials for FOX, but it looks like he's going to try Internet-direct video as the main way of getting his views out.

Like him or not, his greatest gift is the ability to make the chalkboard a fascinating teaching tool. As a teacher I greatly admired that skill.

Just to clarify this point... he did not make racist comment about the President. Glenn Beck said he felt Obama was racist towards white people. I do not support his assertions in this regard, but after watching the show since it's inception at Fox, I can say without any doubt that Mr. Beck is not a racist.

John, if that is not splitting hairs, I don't know what is. Take a look at what his religious beliefs say about African-Americans and get back to us. They've had to 'address' the issue of leadership in that church. And, of course, 'we' are better able to judge racism than African-Americans are? Right! Good one!

To say that racism is an American issue belittles the problem. It is a global issue that is older than recorded history. To imply that american blacks are somehow better positioned to understand this is unfounded. Though I have no knowlege of your friend's position, I afford her the respect of her views. It is my position that anyone that asserts a belief that America is racist has failed to read and UNDERSTAND our Constitution. Have there been HUGE problems in this regard in our past... yes. Do remnants of this still hold merit today??? YES! Do good and decent people reject racism in this country??? again YES!

Racism today takes many forms, and my sister in law was a victim of it at the hands of an illegal imigrant a couple days ago. I have been a victim of it a long time ago when I was married to a black woman. It is not something that only white people are capable of being. There is a 2% minority of any particular group that want nothing more than to be miserable and ensure that the rest of us are miserable along with them.

I also believe that as long as we allow ourselves to be defined by a hyphen (African-American, Latino-American, etc) that our divisions will continue. We as a people come from many different CULTURES, both religious and of national origin, but we are ALL Americans, and all members of the HUMAN race. This is what needs to be taught to our children. The divisive garbage taking place today does nothing but deny us the ability to stand together for what is right.

I am also well versed on the beliefs of Glenn Beck and the Mormon Church. Those views were wrong then, and hold no place in the church today. To make the link to his faith's now disowned beliefs and imply that he must share them is akin to saying that all of Islam is evil because of the twisted perversions of a few. That argument does not hold water with me.

With all due respect John. I know the history of 'racism' in the U.S., Brazil, Japan and a quite a few other countries much better than you do. I teach some courses on this subject. And it is a bit insulting to claim that those whose ancestors have been enslaved have an 'equal' voice, perception to those who have never experienced that?

Current politics skirt the issue of racism with ploys like yours above. Should we tell Jews that their perceptions of the Holocaust are 'equal' to ours?

The 'divisive ploy' is a way of 'dismissing' racism so that one can continue with agendas that still have that problem encrypted within them? It would be great if we could sweep away several hundred years of history, but we can't.

Enough for now. I have no intention of offering a 'course' on Club Polk.

It is also no less a political ploy for those that feed off the misery of a dis-enfranchised group of people to keep dredging up the past in order to perpetuate the illusion that nothing has changed, and never will, without a revolution.

Both sides use any argument they can to avoid what is common sense to the rest of us. Getting back to Glenn Beck and his leaving Fox, what his show was all about was getting his audience to use some common sense in their daily lives, and to seek out the truth for themselves. Because of his show, I take nothing any of the talking heads have to say seriously until I have looked into it for myself.

    Thanks Glenn!

America is very racist. Except for the fact that the most powerful man, elected by the people (President) is a black guy, and the highest paid entertainer is a black woman (Oprah)... except for those things.... still very racist.
