New Monitor 60's
I have an Onkyo 606 receiver from previous HTIB. Upgraded to CS2 about a month ago...big improvement!! Just got two Monitor 60's to upgrade my fronts. I'm not as impressed with them as I was when I got the center. I haven't had any problems with the 606 but am now thinking it might be time to upgrade my receiver to push the 60's more. Any suggestions on what receiver would be a decent upgrade to the 606. I like the sound of the Onkyo but was wanting to maybe try something different. I was set on the Marantz 5005 but don't know if I can get something better for less. A4L has it for 499. Went by bestbuy today and they have the denon 791 open box for 400. What do you guys think? Thanks. Matt

Just get whatever brand you want as long as it has pre-outs. Most pre-out models have more power than your 606 and then if you need even more than they have, you can purchase a dedicated amp for just powering your speakers.
What about them doesnt impress you? I run them and they are pretty good IMHO."....not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted." William Bruce Cameron, Informal Sociology: A Casual Introduction to Sociological Thinking (1963) -

I run my M60s with a Denon 1611 (no pre-outs) and I love it. Pre-outs are pushed here religiously but keep in mind that getting an avr with them usually sends your electronics into the four-figure price zone unless you find amazing deals. For me, my setup is perfect, and will be even more perfect when I talk the wife into a CS2 upgrade from the CS10.TV: 65" Samsung QLED 4K

Just buy last years models on closeout. Also my Integra DRT 5.9 wasnt even 1k when NEW.
From Onkyo anything 7xxx, 8xxx will have pre-outs and still be quite under a grand."....not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted." William Bruce Cameron, Informal Sociology: A Casual Introduction to Sociological Thinking (1963) -
I had 4 different receivers on my monitor 60's. I tried an Onkyo 504 & 674, Denon 1910, Yamaha Rxv1800. I loved the combo of the Yamaha and the monitors, it added some nice detail without being bright, and it was a BEAST of a receiver. I still think it's better quality than my Pioneers but it wasn't a good match with my Rti's and I wasn't running an amp yet so I sold it.

An AVR with Pre-outs is a good suggestion for the sheer fact that it offers flexibility.
Four figure price zone? You haven't shopped Onkyo in a few years.
If you can, take your wife to a Video Only if you have those in your area and demo and a CS10 and CS20 back to back, tell her the CS2 is the same as the CS20 and you're in.EndersShadow wrote: »From Onkyo anything 7xxx, 8xxx will have pre-outs and still be quite under a grand.

Well I got the 60's on Monday afternoon. Between work, kids, and wife sleeping during the day when I was off on Tuesday, I really didn't get a chance to crank em. Maybe about halfway up. After I posted earlier, I went upstairs and cranked them up a little. They are crystal clear all the way up to the max on the receiver and plenty loud. I used to have to turn the center up about 2 or 3 clicks above what Audessey configured but now it seems I need to go up about 6 or 7 because when I am listening at the same level as before when the fronts kick in they are overwhelming. By raising the center, it keeps the main volume down a little and tames the 60's. Was watching the new Chicago police show tonight and when the action scenes came on she kept telling me to turn it down. BTW I Bi-amped the 60's tonight using the rear surrounds on the 606. Seemed to make them even more clearer but it may just be in my head. Minimal if anything. May keep the 606 for a while longer after all. Thanks.

Turned them up to max on the receiver ?
Take it easy champ, unless you like buying speakers every couple weeks. A good rule of thumb is to try and keep it below 0.0 on the volume scale. Have fun.HT SYSTEM-

Well the 606 goes from 0= no sound to 65= max....no reverse countdown. I did take it slow to make sure there was no distortion. Doesn't start getting loud until about 45.
