It has happened to me a few times, but this one got me good..

This time I was lisening to NIN (Nine Inch Nails) I was sitting here in the dark deep into the music, and digging the effects of the sounds all around me,all of a sudden there was a voice to the left of me,and it made me jump and got my heart racing. I thought my wife had walked in but no I was still here by myself.

I really love the way it seems like some of the music is right between your ears if that makes any sense. the sound stage is deep and centered but yet it envelops you..

Nope....but I did wire a pair up wrong back in the day and since they were at volume notch 11, they announced their objection in a way I'd like to never revisit.

Happens to me quite often. It's definitely not a reflection, my music room is filled with acoustic dampeners. And SDA is not an "effect"
Good music, a good source, and good power can make SDA's sing. Tubes make them dance.

This... seems every time I spin a record, something suprises me. I was listening to strings of Elanor Rigby on the Beatles Anthology the other dayand I was blown away by the presence of those strings right in my living room.

Technically SDA is an acoustical phenomenon, not effect. An effect gives the impression something is contrived or not based in reality. Interaural Crosstalk is a real phenomenon, SDA minimizes that audible phenomenon.

That's my take on it anyway.

Polk has even called it an effect but perhaps we read differently, and on different planets. I wouldn't call an effect contrived as that's more of an opinion based word to me and the result is audible in regards to SDA. Is this even a subject that has to get into the phenomenon category? As in UFO...the Yeti and other things. This is just science isn't it? but we're probably more into semantics at this point.

I'm out of big words for this month, so please downgrade me intellectually until April1st.

Not SDA but I have gotten that on a few tracks (Yes, Magnification, "In the Presence of - " HDCD). There are voices that seem to come from behind. It isn't reflection as there is plenty of room (like a whole room) behind me. It must be more "head logic" used in the recording process.

Yep they sure have. Also some Q-sound recordings can do it too on regular speakers.
Please. Please contact me a ben62670 @ yahoo.com. Make sure to include who you are, and you are from Polk so I don't delete your email. Also I am now physically unable to work on any projects. If you need help let these guys know. There are many people who will help if you let them know where you are.

My living room is very "live", so whenever music is playing and I'm in another room, I'll get up to answer the door or the phone, which of course is just the speakers throwing sounds all over the house. One day the wife and I were in the back of the house with a Bob James CD playing in the l/r, and we both thought we heard a woman sobbing outside. That really freaked us out. i'm getting chills just thinking about it...

Indeed Larry! But in a good way. This album is phenominal on the SDA's. Probably good on "normal" speakers as well....

Roger Waters - Amused to Death is recorded with Q sound. It blows me away on my SR-6500 in the car.

    1. Various songs have a dog barking. With the speakers in phase and the eq set properly, you can hear the dog barking and running towards you it end up with the dog at your side window. Freaky!!

    2. Track 8 - Too much rope, the song starts off with gun shots in a concentration camp. Apart from the gun shot, you can hear the shell ejecting from the chamber and falling and clattering on the ground.

    3. Three wishes - This has got to be the most lyrically rich and yet depressing song that I have ever heard. Pure goosebump material.

I would love to hear this album on SDA's perhaps those who have heard it on SDA can chime in.

I love the super wide soundstage and front to back 3D effect but on many many occasion, I've heard instruments and vocals come from way out on the side and from in back of me which at first startled me then brought a big smile to my face.

Not long ago my wife and I saw Cheryl Crow in an acoustically magnificent venue. They played Led Zepplin's "Rock & Roll" and the instruments and vocals were coming from behind and beside us. No SDAs there but it sure brought a smile to our faces.

Brock the effects of a good HT rig can make you just duck at times and jump out of your sweet spot.

I've been surprised by such "effects" with regular monopole speakers.

Our cat lays on the floor at my feet, within the sweet spot. I can tell by watching her ears and by how jerks with alarm like something jumped out at her.

On the other hand, some recordings are artificially manipulated with a lot of out of phase info that sounds SDA-like on regular speakers but hollow and vague on the SDAs. Too much of a good thing is not always good.

The first couple of times, I walked around the house trying to figure out where the sound was coming from. I still occasionally pause a new CD to make sure the sound isn't real. Agree with the comments on HT. Years ago in an apartment, my wife insisted someone was knocking on our door until I replayed that part. Always brings a smile!

It's happened before for police sirens especially. The same for door-knocks and phone calls. Sometimes for footsteps or breathing. It's pretty cool, except when you go rummaging through the house to find a phone, or end your listening session and find out that there's been 3 phonecalls and the police destroy the door to capture the burglar hiding behind your recliner. Perhaps the best setup for a listening room is to have a mirror or the door in sight, so that nobody can sneak up on you and murder you.
