Scuttlebutt is that the Phillies may be making a trade for him. Straight up Howard for Pujols.

Whattaya think? Should they ditch Howard for Pujols?

On paper it's a no brainer. In reality, maybe not so much.

He's off to the Cubbies next year. Too many stars have aligned to make that a distinct possibility.
I never had it like this where I grew up. But I send my kids here because the fact is you go to one of the best schools in the country: Rushmore. Now, for some of you it doesn't matter. You were born rich and you're going to stay rich. But here's my advice to the rest of you: Take dead aim on the rich boys. Get them in the crosshairs and take them down. Just remember, they can buy anything but they can't buy backbone. Don't let them forget it. Thank you.Herman Blume - Rushmore

    Not exactly a no brainer.

Pujols will be a free agent at the end of the season. He has every incentive to play out of his mind this year so he can garner the most in free agency. That's good for St. Louis. Sure, Philly would love that, too.

It makes no sense for St. Louis to trade him now if they feel they're competitive since they'll be getting rid of a player that's playing for a new contract.

If Philly gets him and they fail to win a World Series, they're likely out Pujols after the season and they're out Howard.

The flip side is that if St. Louis doesn't win a World Series they're likely out Pujols anyways and they have no first baseman.

The Cubs will have the money to spend with all the expiring contracts next season. They also have the desire to spend. And the rivals of the Cards... you can see where I'm going. Pujols has always felt a bit slighted by the St Louis organization. If this turns any more ugly, then he may have the perfect opportunity to get back at 'em.

The Yanks could poss make a play for him. But with Tex, why would they? The BoSox just locked up Gonzalez. And I can't see any other club doling out that sort of dosh.

He'll be a Cub the year after next. Mark my words.

Pujols would be smart to wave his no trade to go to the Phillies and the Cards would be smart to make that trade so they could get something for Albert. This isn't the first time this deal has been rumored.

I think he'll be a Cardinal next year though. Cubs just need to make sure the Cardinals have to pay as much as possible for him.

It isn't outside of the realm of possibility, but all of the Cubs/Pujols talk is more Cub fan slobbering than realistic prediction.

The Cubs have Pena for a year who also has every incentive to have a productive season. If he has an off year, the Pujols stuff is more likely, but still...its not like the Cubs are the only ones who will have a shot at Pujols at the end of the year or will have the money to spend. The Cardinals will probably try to retain him. For example, though, Milwaukee will likely be tossing Prince Fielder and Mark Attanasio is hungry to win with fat bank to spend. The Cubs, also, show no sign of making a serious run at this stage in the game and with expiring contracts things are even worse if they don't line things up correctly.

The Cardinals can't afford him or don't want to afford him. His contract may be up at the end of the year and he'll be an unrestricted free agent. However, the Cardinals need to develop some new talent. Howard wanted to run last year for more money. He's inconsistent and compared to Pujols, he's a bargain.

Pujols isn't going to sign for a single year. He knows what he's worth. He also knows he's getting older. He's 31. If he gets a 10 year contract like he's asking, unless he gets traded, where ever he goes, that's where he's retiring from.

Unless of course Pujols is asking for something absurd because he knows the Cards won't bite and they'll have to get rid of him. Seems like he wants to leave.

The Cards are going to lose everything they have invested in him at the end of next year. Pujols is not staying with the Cards, I would be surprised if he did unless they magically find some cash and loose all sense to sign an aging player to an extremely long and expensive contract. The Cards are not going to let their cash cow walk out the door for nothing either. Pujols will not be on the Cubs, they don't have the money until next year. I doubt Pujols would want to go there anyway, the club doesn't fit him. The Cards have made their best offer, Puljos declined. If the Cards fear they cannot reach an agreement, Pujols is out by the mid-season trade deadline. They are going to get multiple prospects plus a talent for him where ever he goes.

I'm not sayin' he's going to Philly. I think it's unlikely. The only way they can get Pujols, IMO, is if Oswalt retires at the end of the year like he says he is. Then they will have the payroll room. By that time though, Pujols will be taken. I seriously doubt it's the Cubs that are going to get him though.

However, he did report to training and said he wanted to be a Cardinal forever.
