Guys,

If i ship an item COD for $600 are there any pitfalls I should be aware of. First time down this avenue and was just wondering. Is there an extra charge by UPS for using this method?

Yes there is an additional fee for COD shipments (via UPS). I believe it is based on the dollar amount.

I just called UPS last night about this very thing. When you drop the package off, you pay only the shipping fee. You specify the price of the item being shipped, and then the total amount that is to be collected by the driver (item price + shipping price + COD fee). The COD fee is $7 according to the guy I spoke with last night.

FedEx won't allow you to ship via COD unless you have an account with them. I had to ask the guy 3 or 4 times because that seemed like an absolutely stupid policy, but they did say that it was a 'very easy process to get an account.'

One BIG catch is that you must pay for the item before you open the package. Once you open it and find a "box-of-rocks", you are stuck with having already paid for the package. Under no circumstance will UPS allow you to "inspect" the shipment before paying for it.

So, because of this, COD is worthless - in my opinion.
It offers NO guarantees that you are getting what you paid for.

    rs,
Agree from a buyer POV, but as a seller at least it gets you a rubber check... wait, that's no good either.

    Brett,
Yeah, the whole FedEx registration process takes a few minutes on-line. Does include registering a CC#.
    More later,

Paying for something before you get it shipped to you is, IMO, worse off then getting something sent to you via COD. True, you can't inspect the package, but you're in the same boat if the guy sends it normally.

The only advantage that I see, is that if you DO happen to open a box of rocks, it's nothin to go to the bank and do a stop payment on that badboy. Can't do that the other way.......
