Budget Receiver to match up to SDA2a's

Hi Everyone,
I've been lurking and have learned alot so far- thanks all. Grew up listening to dad's Monitor 10's, and have just acquired a pair of SDA's (for the second time). The rig I use is my dad's old Yamaha CR-840 which is no powerhouse but sounds pretty good through the speakers. My challenge is that I need to replace this with something more modern for Home Theater setup. I do have a Yamaha RX-V490 currently for that purpose, but when I hook up the Polks to that one, they sound muddy and hollow by comparison. Apparently, the quality of the RX is nowhere near that of the CR.
I'm hoping you guys could give me some suggestions as to a cheap or used AVR with pre-outs that I can build off of in the future (amps, etc.) as funds come available. My plan is to sell off the CR and use (only) that money for the replacement. Can I get a sound quality equal or better to that old Yamaha for about the same money? I know it's gonna be tough, but I scan Craigslist and Ebay regularly. I just need some ideas on which brands/models to look for.
I could also do a trade with someone who is looking for a CR in nice shape.

Budget A/V Receiver + SDA 2A's = In short, no..., at least not without an external amp to drive the 2A's. Anything you'll be getting probably wouldn't do that great, especially since the 2A's are a 4 ohm speaker. My advice would be to look for the cheapest pre-out A/V receiver you can possibly get, then look for a decent amp. I can't think of any "cheap" A/V receiver that wouldn't probably burn itself up trying to run the 2A's. Hence, get the amp at the same time.

That's what I was afraid of. Any ideas on a decent cheap or used amp that would serve me well?

Audiogon is a good place to look but it all depends on your budget as to what you want/or can afford.Remember, when you're running from something, you're running to something...-me

Yep- checked it and there isn't too much currently in my price range.
