Is it really a flop? (RE: Tom Cruise's "Knight and Day)

First of all, I've never seen the movie but I intend to see it on DVD/Blu-ray. This thread is more about how news about movie box-office grosses are reported.

When "Knight and Day" came out last summer, it was widely panned and it did underwhelming business at the movie theaters. However, based upon the reviews from those on this site who have seen the movie, this film may actually be ok. Therefore, I was surprised to find out that "Knight and Day" was actually Fox's biggest movie from 2010. A little more digging at boxofficemojo.com revealed that "Knight and Day" grossed over $260 million worldwide, with over 70% of its gross from overseas markets.

When the DVD/Blu-ray of "Knight and Day" was released, all I read is what a "box office bomb" it was. I guess the reality is anything but....

the overseas market is becoming a bigger and bigger concern for hollywood.. it would depend on its initial budget, but if it only did $100 million or so domestic, it probably would be a flop since it most likely cost near that to make..

but then caught up and did well once it was released overseas.. US tends to be very US-focused, except for corporations =)

According to the second link in my initial post, "Knight and Day" cost $117 million to make and only grossed $76 million domestically. I guess one can call it a flop if only domestic gross is counted. At the minimum, including the cost of marketing and proceeds from DVD/Blu-ray sales/rental, I'd imagine the film has made a tidy profit for Fox.

The film is not "OK." It's an abomination. I'm sure someone will yell at me for saying so, because they like "mindless entertainment," but it was HORRIBLE. The entire basis of the story made no sense. Both characters were complete caricatures. The action was not believable (it doesn't have to be REALISTIC, just enough that you can reasonably suspend disbelief, not go "come ON!").

I'm actually quite proud of the American movie-going public for not seeing it. It deserves its "bomb" status.

I, too, could not stand this movie , not only because it was a farce but also because Cameron Diaz looked HORRIBLE and was still selected as a female lead in an highly-advertised action movie; all of those cosmetic surgery must have caught up finally, thick powder couldn't hide it anymore, especially on Bluray

I agree with the rest... I was not impressed. The script had potential as a comedy, but the original lead, Leslie Nielson, walked on it for health reasons.

(Surely, I don't know that for a fact, but it did play like a spy-spoof film, and don't call me Shirley.)

Well .... kind of actually ..... gulp ...... liked "Knight and Day".

Definitely helps if you don't watch it with the same expectations of a "Frontline", or "POV" documentary on PBS ,but .....

Will agree on one thing, though.
Cameron Diaz could have used a couple of more coats of warpaint on her puss; she grins, and the canyons on Mars come to mind.

But .... I kind of liked "Knight and Day".
Worth a rent, but not a buy (especially Blu-Ray).

I was actually pretty amused by it. No, it wasn't realistic. Yes, it was kindof... comedic, and i'm not sure if it was meant to be that way, but i don't hate myself for watching it.

I enjoyed it, but if I had paid to see it in the theater, I would've been PISSED. Tom Cruise really doesn't do comedy well (short of wearing a fat suit a la Tropic Thunder) and Cameron Diaz was really the only thing that made it watchable. Still, few movies really BOMB, because home video pretty much ensures they'll make their money back even on a total crapfest. I'm sure even that Nutcracker thing will break even once it hits the home market.

Considering that its whole schtick is that it's the Nutracker (but in 3D), I wouldn't be too sure about that. Plus... kids tend to be horrified of anything Holocaust related. Just my personal experience.

If a movie does not make twice what it cost, here in the U.S. its considered a bomb, As far as a good movie goes, its your basic Hey, its me tom cruise, in another one of my movies, where i make a bunch of stupid faces,, and pretty much just try to act, and look cool,, In other words its a tom cruise movie,, not what one would consider a good movie, that he happens to be in,, Just more tom cruise fodder for the masses,, on the other hand, if your a fan of his, its probaly your cup of tea.

Or, some people could care less about who the players are, and what they do or don't do outside the screen. I'm not a fan of Tom Cruise. I just happened to find the movie very entertaining.

Never said anything about what the actors do offscreen, simply implying my take on the film,,, You either like it, or you dont,, I personally dont care to pay for movies with bad actors in them, saw this free, at brother in laws,, mindless junk,,, IMHO,

Does this have to be rehashed with every bad movie? Just because something is classified as "mindless junk" doesn't mean it has to be good to peopel who like "mindless junk." If I like "comedy" does that mean I have to enjoy every comedy?

There's good mindless junk and bad mindless junk. This is horrible mindless junk. (to me, good for you if you enjoyed it)

Well, it was ok. Go into it with an open mind that it's an action movie full of improbable events and if you can stomach Cruise as uber-cool then it's entertaining. The Mrs. liked it...I missed about 1/4 of it when I dozed off :)
