Sony SS-M7's and Dynaco ST-70

Hi all -

Some have asked why I have not posted these on here yet. I have had them up locally, way over-priced to try to make money - and I felt like I didn't want to take advantage of my fellow polkies. I now want these out of the way, and could use the cash, so more reasonably priced.

Sony SS-M7a speakers. I purchased these and said they would be my last speaker - unless I found the SS-M9's (Lucky me). Local pickup in 18018 (Bethlehem PA). I will have them setup ready for a great listen before purchasing. I've posted a number of reviews and postings about my Sony's. Cosmetically a 7/10 - some discoloring at the bottom of one speaker - one small chip (Smaller than a dime) on the same speaker, and it looks like someplace that someone had something sticky on the top of the other speaker. You can't see it unless it's close. I have not tried to do anything to them to fix them, and I'm sure someone more handy could turn these into an 8 or 9 out of 10. Function perfectly, and just an amazing set of speakers.

$400 local pickup.

Dynaco ST-70 modified with the Welbourne modification. The modification alone is close to 300 bucks. I purchased this off of Mike (Face) about a year ago (maybe less) to pair with the Sony's. They were a great pairing. Only reason I'm not using it is it cannot handle a 2-4 ohm load of the upgraded Sony SS-M9's I'm using. The tubes are upgraded - 4 Mullards (Bigger ones), A British Sylvania (Think it's called the preamp tube) and 2 USA Sylvania and 2 RAM tubes (The small ones). If you have specific questions, i can look at the tubes and tell you more, but I know very little about tubes.

$350 local pickup.

Happy holidays!

James

I do not know. Hopefully someone else can chime in. I'm a plug and play, let my ears decide guy - I don't know much of the technical stuff.

I could tell you that there is no switch to go between 4 and 8 ohm.

St-70 can run 4 ohm loads easily. The output transformers have taps for 4, 8 and 16 ohms.

The only question is whether or not you would need to reconnect the 4 ohm taps. I'm guessing that you would, given that there is only one positive binding post per channel. Mike (Face) will know the answer for certain.

If the taps are disconnected and you only have 1 positive and 1 negative terminals (I guess, 8 Ohms?), then the other taps are still inside the case. You'd have to reconnect them. I never understood why people remove the extra taps, as dynakitparts.com (Kevin) sells very nice 4-terminal strips specifically made for ST-70 refurbishment. I have installed those on both of my ST-70 and I'm extremely happy with them. You cannot connect a full-size spade to those terminals, but you can connect a banana terminal, bare wire, or a small vintage spade.

I have agreed to terms on the ST-70 with Frank (Cassidy) - he should be picking it up late weekend or next week. If somethign falls through, feel free to get in line, but no promises of course :)

The speakers are still for sale. I'm surprised - figured those would go first.

Dang James! If I had known you were putting this amp up for sale I would have jumped on it. I would have even paid good money to have it shipped. I guess I need to pay more attention.

    Christmas bump...

Here are the only other SS-M7's in the country for sale (That I can find at least)

FYI: Mine will come with the stands that are shown - They are nothing fancy, but did the job. I do know of someone selling the original stands if you were interested.

Congrats James. You're much better at this than I. And, Bluecomet is a Pro. I have no idea WHERE he's going to STORE your speakers because I've been to his house and it's wall to wall SDA's and Monitors, among other things, in the main room.

Kudos to BC in any case he's got a LOVE for audio!

And Happy New Year to all.

On another note, how is the house hunting going? I see that you're in an apartment in Bethlehem for now. Not an optimum situation, for sure. Here's hoping for a new home--soon!

    Thanks CNH -

Yes - apartment life is difficult, but we're managing. We both have jobs, so we're on the hunt. Problem is, our NJ house is being rented, so we need to get out from under that before buying another house. Looks like we MAY be renting a house in the next few months so we can actually move :)

Happy New Year to you too!

Good to meet you James, I hope you find a house soon so you can enjoy your other speakers soon. Thanks for letting me hear your gear. I was surprised how big the Sony M9s are. I am enjoying the M7's. Not only do they sound great but they look pretty cool too.

Cnh, I hope to have a dedicated sound room for all of my speakers and gear in the near future. Until then my family room has become the valley of the speakers. I am also planning on opening a nightclub in the near future. Do you think a pair of SRS 1.2's would rock the house. I may make new Polkies out of some people around here after hearing the big boys. Happy new year to all.
