I picked up a pair of black S8's today mainly because the price was right (free). I never find these deals.
The gentleman said that one was damaged when it was dropped, that something fell off the back of one of the speakers and that he had it taped in place. He wasn't sure if it worked anymore as they were packed away for several years. I didn't try them yet as I wanted to see what was damaged first. All the MW's and PR's move freely. I pulled the mid-woofer and checked around inside. I don't see anything wrong, no tape. Other than a ding on the corner of the cabinet they look perfect. I'll try hooking them up tonight or tomorrow.
He also gave me a pair of Monitor II M3 wedge speakers. One had something rattling around inside. It turned out to be the crossover board. A little hot glue and it will be good.

Cool! Nice price too. You don't see these too often. Certainly not the prettiest speakers polk ever made, but pretty decent sound."They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety."
Benjamin Franklin, February 17th, 1775.
"The day that I have to give up my constitutional rights AND let some dude rub my junk...well, let's just say that it's gonna be a real bad day for the dude trying to rub my junk!!"

I just hooked them up and they play. I did find what the seller was talking about. The SL-5000 tweeters have a plastic mount. The magnet twist-locks into place. One of the locking tabs is snapped off and the magnet can fall off. It is secured with packaging tape but some epoxy should make a permanent fix. I am just glad it wasn't one of those rare MW-8000 drivers that was the problem.Stan

This is odd. You rarely see these speakers and now I see another pair in Vienna, VA for $25. http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/nva/ele/2082398806.html

The S series well was the S series. Not a favorite of mine. The M3's were cool, a lot of different apps for those. A good find and the price was right. Enjoy.

I listened to the S8's I thought they sounded pretty decent. I may need to replace the one tweeter though as it seems a little attenuated when compared to the good one. The cabinets are very solid and well constructed. I think the cabinets and grills will clean up pretty nice. Then I have to figure out what to do with them.
I reattached the M3 XO board with some hot glue. They are working perfectly well. I may use these in my lowly HT system. I haven't taken photos yet but here is the link for info on the M3: http://www.polkaudio.com/homeaudio/products/recent/m3ii/Stan
