Hi!! I'm another new guy with SDA-2's

I'd like to introduce myself cause I can already tell that this is my first real hobby. When I was a kid my dad was always buying stereo equipment, different amps and speakers were an almost monthly occurrence until one day when I was probably about 8, the most amazing thing I'd ever seen was hauled into the living room. Polk Audio SDA SRS. I remember just being in complete awe. I remember thinking, the guy who made these signed them??? Like its his baseball card?
Never really got to hear them. My dad listened to oldies and never had the volume much louder than a normal conversation. We would watch movies occasionally and he would crank them a bit, I think he was afraid of them. Obviously I was forbidden to go near any of it, he never used it himself. But one summer day in 1992 I decided I wanted to HEAR them. I put in Metallica. Enter Sandman. And I turned it up....way up. And kept turning them up, I never had a feeling like that until I took his Corvette out a decade later, but thats for a different forum.
So, fast forward to 2010. Got tired of tin sounding "theatre in a box" stuff thats everywhere now. Found some SDA 2's and a Yamaha 5540 for $260 on Craig's. All those memories of secretly blasting my dad's stuff are flooding back. I blew out an MW 6502 the first night. I called Polk and they sent a new one for $60. So now I'm ready to go.
What should I look for next? Are there amps and pre amps in the $200 to $300 budget area that will give me significantly better sound than this Yamaha? Gotta be honest, they sound awesome right now. Thanks guys!

Welcome, you will feel the force of the SDA's here from the others. The biggest Polk's I have are some M10B's, waiting to evolve with some new RDO-194's and sometime soon a new crossover. But for now I get to practice the dark arts on some Monitors 7C's that were recently acquired from Goodwill last weekend. I just received the new MW6502's for them today. Glad you are enjoying the new speakers, have fun.

Welcome to Club Polk!
Congratulations on getting back to SDA "sound". I will be getting to hear that "sound" soon when I pick up a set of 1C's I bought. As far as amp & preamp, are you looking to spend $200-$300 total?..... ><////(*> -

I guess it depends on what is important. Does the pre-amp need to be a quality component or is it just a hub for the connections? And would I be able to use this Yamaha I have as a tuner? As you can see, I'm very new to this. -
If your Yamaha has pre-outs for an amplifier, you could use it for now. Will a dedicated preamp make a difference?....As you start researching, you will start learning that EVERYTHING makes a difference. But, for now, if yours does have pre-outs, you could look at Pycroft's Adcom 555II amp for sale in the classifieds here. It is one of the favorite budget amps on this forum, and you probably wouldn't want/need to upgrade for quite a while.
This would be a HUGE improvement over your reciever alone.
Then you could work on the preamp after (tubes, tubes, tubes )..... ><////(*> -
+ 1 on Pycroft's Adcom, when you get bigger SDA's (and you will) it will power those as well. For now it will make a big difference. and Welcome.

Did the Corvette incident end well? -
were those sda 2's or sda srs 2's?

No pre-outs. Meaning RCA's out for L and R front channel right? No. This receiver does not have that. So I need a preamp. What are tubes? -

Geez. I just got these and now I want to drive to Brandon with 600 bucks. The corvette era ended when my dad sold it after spinning out leaving a gas station in the rain. My dad is a ****. I raced and beat a Viper with his Z06... and everything else on the road that night. -
Hey, just noticed in your description that you're a Floridian...cool!
Well, first I should ask you if you're planning on this to be a dedicated 2 channel system, or a home theater system? It's hard to do both, without sacrifices sonically in both directions. I know, I tried. I'm now going back to 2 channel only, and the sound improvements have been huge...for me. YMMV
Since yours doesn't have pre-outs, you could start with something like what WastelandWand'r just listed in the classifieds at a fantastic price. It would go great with the amp I mentioned earlier - Adcom GFP 555II. This combo would get you well on the way....to spending even more money like the rest of us lunatics!
Tubes is a long story, but basically there are two main types of audio gear...tubes, or solid state. Many argue what is better, but with my experiences, tubes has shown me enough that I'm going deeper down that path...... ><////(*> -
Thats a great deal on those for 600 with new updated tweeters and new caps, hell that $300 right there. Tube amp and tube pre amps..... I would wait and do allot more research on that one. There is another guy selling a adcom 555 pre on here for $100.
I have to stay away from fast cars and bikes because if it goes 200mph I will go that fast or die trying. -

Holy crap Zarrdoss! I just read what you linked. These are 2 hours away from me!
If these showed up before I bought Conradicles, things might have gone completely different for me. But don't worry Eric, I'm still happy with your showroom condition SDA 1C's!
If I brought those monsters home (SRS2's), the wife would kill me!!!
PS: Zarrdoss is right about tubes. They require more research before diving into...... ><////(*> -

Those are SDA SRS 2's. Am I driving to Brandon (2hours away) with 6 bills in my pocket tomorrow guys? -
haha if I beat fishbones there that is
-
-
Depending oh what caps he put in there might be 3-400 or more in upgrades alone, definitely at least worth a listen IMO. I have never heard a pair of those but seem to be held in high regard around here.
-
-
I don't even have the right components to drive what I have now. Besides my niece's birthday party is tomorrow.
-
one thing I have learned with really good deals around here is, you snooze you loose. lol:rolleyes:
when I got into this I got a pair of SDA SRS 2.3 and then a Pair of 2.3tl came up and I kicked myself in the ****$ for not getting those instead, so I go those too, and eventually got decent amps to run them. I have not seen anymore 2.3tl's around here for sale since I got mine.:D -
Those are a great deal!
You would need even more power to bring those puppies up to their potential, and you would need a good sized room also (good sized living room)...... ><////(*> -

I didn't know Polk made an SRS "light". Its a pair with half the drivers and half the tweeters... I really think I should be late to the birthday party.... -
I was late to my nephew's bday once...was buying a piece of real estate. Just don't be too late. If I didn't already buy a very nice pair, I would be driving up there right now, LOL!...really, not kidding!..... ><////(*>

15 x 25, but the wrong way probably. My electronics are on the long wall -

The Adcom 555 should power those fine. -

Actually, from the feedback I've received from the SDA gurus on here. With your room dimensions, that might be the perfect wall to put them on...they are different than a normal speaker.
My room is 14x20, and 2 members have told me to put them (sda 1c) on the long wall!..... ><////(*> -
andwings2go wrote: »15 x 25, but the wrong way probably. My electronics are on the long wall
thats perfect because you need 3-4 feet on either side of those and about 6-9 feet or more apart so the long Wall is perfect. -
Ok. I'm gonna go get them in the morning. Should I offer 5 or just be a gentleman and hand him 6?
-
It's your money! But be a gentleman either way...he could be a polk member if he's done mods...and you may ask him for help some day on here.
But make sure a bring a truck. Click link for more info...including size:

Why are these pics as much fun as pics of naked women??? -

he did say firm, if they are in good condition and all drivers work no pushed in domes or holes in surrounds I would just hand him 6. it will be interesting to see what caps he used. -
It doesn't say anything about the SDA cord, but with the work he's done, I'm sure he has it. If not, you can get a better one anyway from Ben, on here.
Let us know how it goes. I'm stoked for ya, and envious...I can't make the 700 mile trip to get mine til Thanksgiving!..... ><////(*>
