Ron Howard? Really? REALLY?? I'm oh-so-skeptical. I don't know if many Polkies are familiar with this particular series by Stephen King, but I can honestly say it's one of my favorite series of all time and Roland (the main character) IS my favorite novel-born individual of all time. Anyways, I won't make this a big rant since I'll probably be yelling at a wall, but I have to say I'm sorely disappointed and nervous with the selection made to helm King's self-proclaimed magnum opus. There are other directors, darker directors, that might do a better job of it. Peter Jackson, Guillermo Del Toro? *sigh*

These are the ONLY books I've read from Senor King. All of 'em brilliant. That being said... I wouldn't put too much stock in this news. This has been in development Hell for decades.

JJ Abrams was 'kinda' on board for a while. King loved his progression throughout the Lost series... but man if this is legit... boo.

Since we do have some fans here, I have a question: what actor do you guys think would make a good Roland? I'm not too sure myself... I like the cut of Viggo Mortensen (he definitely has a Clint Eastwood build) but he doesn't have the voice of the Roland in my mind. Still, he's the best I can come up with. :\/

Viggo is the first person that comes to mind. Reference A History of Violence...

I'm pretty sure JJ Abrams is still involved with the script.

I love Stephen King. Have read every book of his.... EXCEPT for the Dark Tower series, and a few assorted others of his ilk. I know so many people love it and rightfully praise it, but I CANNOT read fantasy novels. I need my books (and for the most part movies) to have some kind of grounding in reality, and though King mostly deals with the fantastical, it's usually all based in an Earth I'm familiar with, rather than a fantasy land. It's just a personal thing.

I wouldn't discount ole' Opie just yet. I mean, did you see The Missing? Also, he did Ransom, Backdraft and Willow. I think he can get dark when he needs to get dark. Though he wouldn't be my first choice, I'm interested to see what he does with it.

Funny you should mention it Bob. I avoid his other books for the exact same reason. You should really read up on all of "meta themes" in the Dark Tower series. Those books make it a special point to break the 4th wall and infringe on reality. Hell... King, himself, makes a guest appearance.

Oh, like I said (or tried to say) I don't try to take anything away from the series, which I hear is fantastic. I've tried to read it MULTIPLE times (and own the "boxed set" of the first four). It's just when I can't at least somewhat relate to the universe a book or movie is set in, I can't lose myself in the book and it becomes not worth reading.

Almost all of his other books take place in a normal world, and then bring that world to a fantastic (as in "fantasy", not "awesome", though both apply) place. It seems the Dark Tower does the opposite - starts in a fantasy world and drags it into the real world (or the real world into it, as it is). My tiny brain don't work that way. :)

Another amazing thing about the series.... it pretty much subverts every trope of the genre. Many of which had their origins in King's body of work. It really is a clever series and is well-constructed and written by any standards of literature.

This would be better as a TV series. Like Battlestar Galactica or the upcoming Walking Dead. There is so much to that series.

Of course on the other hand people said Lord of the Rings couldn't be filmed.

"The Stand' was hardly "Hollywood." It was a TV miniseries. I'm of the opinion that you could NEVER adapt the Stand into something on screen unless it was a 100 hour series.

The Stand is a great book, the movie sucked **** along with IT, and TommyKnockers.

Have you ever read the book Swan Song by Robert McCammon?? Along the same lines of The Stand but better IMO..

Swan Song is a must read book IMHO

Could not have said it better myself TOOL....I read Swan Song back in the late 80's and was blown away by it. While I find The Stand to be a more satisfying read (I have read it 3 times), I found a used copy of Swan Song a few years back and re-read it again, was still amazed at how McCammon was not more recognized for this book.

Again I still find King's book to be the better of the two, but Swan Song should be highly recognized as a great read of apocalyptic America.

I never read the book. But I did find myself watching the mini-series. I haven't laughed so hard in my entire life.

Do you remember that scene where he appears to her in the cornfield. What a friend I have in Jesus... At which point he let's out some redneck guffaw. Side-splittin' I tells ya.

If you like the dark tower series like I did, make sure you read Tears Of The Dragon. It's my favorite Stephen King novel and it's sort of a prequel to The Dark Tower Series. Everyone I loaned it to loved it.

Hey Camp, I read that book & loved it, I could have sworn it was called " Eye of the Dragon".
The Walking man from "The Stand" also made his first appearance.

Yeah, it's The Eyes of the Dragon: One of my favorites by King as well. In fact, as it seems is true with many, I'm not a huge King fan but the Dark Towers, Eyes of the Dragon, and The Stand are pretty F'n fantastic. :)

Hmm, Javier Bardem might not be bad at all if he thinned himself out a bit. Interesting, I might like the idea. ;)
