Computer Virus Kicked My **** :-(

    Windows isnt installed on my other hard drive. Its just the files.

    Say you have a windows 7 OS install disc and you saved it to a hard drive...thats what I have.

    I havent even had time to mess with it today. Might not have time til tonight or tomorrow. So could i change the boot order in bios and run it from the hard drive or should i just save it to a disc and run it from that?

    Id rather not have to save it to disc if i can run it from the hard drive...i just dont know if thats possible

    1. Dont click on certain stuff on face book (cant get on facebook)
    2. Open up internet explorer and change settings (I dont use internet explorer...and i cant open if i wanted to!)
    3. Start it up in safe mode (Can't! Said that!)
    4. Change your default router passwords
    5. Get a mac (hell no!)
    6. Get linux (still leaves me in my current predicament about uploading an OS when I cant open the one I have right now)
    7. Try it from safe mode (again...)
    8. Try the paid version of Malwarebytes Antimalware (I CANT OPEN FREAKIN WINDOWS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
    9. Try anti malware (really...REALLY??)
    10. run your anti virus in safe mode also (AAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

    are you trying to save your files on your hard drive -- if you are.. you can install that hard drive in another bay on another computer... and fetch them

    before you do the nuclear reformatting job

    LOL!!! You just have my side splitting!!! I'm glad you can maintain your sense of humor during this. When I spent three days cleaning up the virus on my PC my wife, son and dog were nowhere to be found!:eek::D

    Viruses don't really bother me. I've never had one before and I know I can just reinstall windows and get rid of it. I made a stupid mistake and paid for it. I still have my laptop, 2 netbooks, my work laptop...and my temporary roommates desk top I can use. So I'm more than good in the computer department!

    I've taken my hard drive out of the case and put it in a USB hard drive reader thing and got the files I need off of it. What I need now is how to put windows back on when its saved on hard drive and I'll be golden.

    My experience has found this to be untrue, except in limited circumstances. Usually, there are many low level drivers that are loaded immediately and will cause a BSOD when you put different hardware in the mix (especially different chipsets).

    If you have the same chipset, you may be able to get away with it.

    If the files are set up properly on your external, you can boot from it and the install will start automatically. If they're not set up properly, you're screwed.

    It's really that simple.

    Get an 8GB flash drive (extremely cheap nowadays). Hook your external up to your laptop and copy all the Win7 files off of it. Go download the Microsoft "Windows 7 USB DVD download tool" and use it to make your flash drive into a boot-able drive. Follow the directions properly and you'll be able to install windows 7 from your USB flash drive.

    Can someone explain how the act of going to a link gets you infected? I thought you had to download something or run a .exe file in order for you to get a virus...

    It's what SHOULD be common sense by now: Don't click on links, and NEVER...EVER...download/run executables from unofficial websites.

    The links themselves do not automatically infect you, but they lead you into situations where you could be fooled into downloading something.

    One time there was a pop-up ad that said "Your PC needs critical security updates" with a YES and NO part of the ad. As there was no X button on the top right corner, clicking either YES or NO resulted in malware.

    At least malwarebytes got rid of it...

    If you don't ever run Windows Update or update your browser - and a SHOCKING number of people don't - there are vulnerabilities that leave you open to infection without actually downloading anything.

    Shoot I have Window Update automatically downloading to my PC almost three times each month it really bogs down the PC when it is downloading in the backround.

    I don't know, someone with a Mac running Snow Leopard sent me a virus and when I asked her, she said she didn't send it. So I guess it's possible even for a Mac to pass on viruses - although it didn't directly affect her computer, it somehow managed to get into her contact list and send itself to other people without her consent...

    EVERY operating system is vulnerable to viruses or things like that.

    Some operating systems are less vulnerable (Linux for example), and others don't have enough of a market share to make writing malware/viruses cost-effective (Apple).

    Just because you hear people say "I've never gotten a virus because I have ***!!", doesn't make them right. Just shake your head and realize that they are living in their fantasy world.

    It's called ActiveX -- imbedded programs in web pages -- flash is a security risk too...

    If you ever get a dialog box in IE or Firefox of Google Chrome or Safari that has buttons for YES NO and CLOSE...

    and if you're slightly paranoid...

    go to task manager and kill the browser process .. all instances of it.

    They can program that dialog box so that whatever button you press will infect your computer with a virus / malware.

    Ok. Now that I've actually had time to play with this...I'm still stuck

    When I downloaded windows from microsoft under the student thing, it downloaded a 'setup' box file and a 'windows marketplace box' file.

    The USB DVD tool thing has to have an iso file. So I downloaded folder2iso and made everything into an iso file and it said its not a valid ISO file. So i tried putting just the windows marketplace box file into a folder by itself and made that into an iso file...still said it wasnt a valid ISO file. Any ideas?

    btw, The windows marketplace box file is the one I would click on in if i wanted to install windows by finding the file in my computer and clicking on it.

    The free version doesn't have real time protection though. And a one time fee of $25 is well worth it....
