What's up everyone?
I just picked up from work our years old Floor model Toshiba HD DVD player HD-A2. It has survived multiple swap sales and not a single person even checked it out.
So I have the Xbox360 HD DVD drive and it sucks ****. I never really liked it other then the fact I owned HD DVD and the PS3 for Blu ray as both where my 1st players to see who was going to win the war back then. When HD DVD lost , I decided not to buy another player. Well I have at least 25 to 30 movies or more on HD DVD and I have access to buy some more at great deals. I did however get rid of the Ps3 ( as I never played games , replaced it as a media server with my Apple TV and not to mention I wanted a Blu ray with SACD and DVD AUDIO hence I own the cambridge Audio Blu ray player)
So I figured I'd take it home , give it a few rounds of Disks and see if I even want to bother with this as Blu ray basically has all the movies I like. But This player is pretty nice. I kinda want to keep it and fool around with HD DVD one last time.
Some fool around with Laser Disc ( yeah I was one of them) some fool around with Vinyl ( as I think it's more hype and memories then good sound quality).
Funny as soon as I connected it , it needed 40 updates. LOL. It's so slow compared to my Cambridge Blu ray player , I could turn on the Toshiba , go get a movie , get it out of the box , turn on the Cambridge , load a movie and start watching it before the Toshiba was ready to open the disc tray. LOL , I don't miss that , at least the Xbox was very fast , it opened up right away.

You are probably not quite crazy, but certainly somewhat neurotic. No worries, though, as you are certainly not alone, especially here. I say keep it and buy some of those movies you can get a deal on. My son and I were discussing some other useless capability he was developing on his computer and he admitted that it was of little actual value or consequence, but it satisfied his technology fix for the time being, so that in itself was reason for doing it. Enjoy!!

My A-2 takes a while to get started, but I bet I still start watching a movie faster than I do on DVD or Blu-ray since HD DVD pretty much starts the movie without having to skip over all the previews, etc.

I never thought about that before, but maybe that's another reason why Blu-ray "won." Hmmm. -
I've never owned an HD-DVD player.
I guess I am ignorant, why would one want to own it? They aren't producing any movies for it anymore, and I would imagine that the picture quality isn't better than BR???
What am I missing? Are there some movies for hd dvd that aren't out on BR? or??? -

They do a great job of upscaling standard DVD and they can be had for cheap, but realistically, there's probably no real reason to want one. I bought mine during the "format war" and have never felt compelled to get rid of it.Things work out best for those who make the best of the way things work out.-John Wooden -

Because if you own HD-DVD's or get them for less than reg DVD's you need one to play them. BD players won't. And not everybody jumped on the HD/BluRay bandwagon and still have a collection of DVD's which some of the HD-DVD playesr do a fine job of upscaling.
I guess you could also ask why own a cassette player or a turntable?____________________

Exactly! I don't care for BluRay and might never. There are still some HD DVD content I haven't watched yet and slowly acquire them at discounted pricing. For new content I am quite ''content'' to buy them on DVD content (I guess that's a lot of contentBecause if you own HD-DVD's or get them for less than reg DVD's you need one to play them. ). As far as casette decks, I still own them but not exactly by choice since I don't know what to do with them (I really hate to throw away working gear even if obsolete

Actually I can say most of the HD DVDs blow away tons of the BD movies I have image quality wise. For some while BD just could not get the releases correct. I own a X-A2 and still use it in my theater. No need to get rid of a good thing.Shoot the jumper.....................BALLIN.............!!!!!

I have 55 HD-DVD movies and HD-XA2 to go with them... As much as I'd like to replace those movies with Blu-Ray, it's just not practically possible, so sometimes I throw a movie in XA2 once in a while and enjoy same picture/sound quality as Blu-Ray

My HD-A35 shares stage with the BDP-83. Yes, slow to boot up, but an excellent player. I was going to sell it (Even posted it here) and the only reason I kept it was because the Eagles concerts never made it to Blu Ray. Now I still buy new HD-DVD's for $1-$4 with free shipping from Amazon.

Because some people had a decent collection of HD-DVDs. HD-DVDs can be found on the web for as little as $3.99. And, the players themselves can be had for next to nothing.~Dan

Another A-2 owner here.
Dan I would love to here your comparison between the A-2 and the CA-BD with audio disks output from the player in analog. My A-2 stomps my Oppo 83.
Not only does it outperform BD disks at times, the machine makes for a pretty good audio transport.Parasound C1, T3, HCA-3500, HCA-2205A, P/DD1550, Pioneer DV-79avi, Oppo BDP-83, WD Media Server W/HDD,

Ah. it would certainly make sense if you can still get real cheap movies and the player costs next to nothing or have a collection of hd-dvds (though I would assume you would already have a player).
To me, it's more like betamax than cassette or a turntable. -

I've got that same model...and a number of HD-DVDs (on the prowl for more--because of the price!). Also run a couple of Blu-rays, just had my cassette player professionally serviced and will return to a turntable soon (have all my LPs sitting in boxes in the basement?).
I have nothing against keeping up with TECH. But who says you can't do both? Newer is not the 'only' thing! However it is what 'marketing to a YOUTH oriented society' selects for--where the youth themselves don't realize what they've been programmed to think and believe they're thinking on their own when they spout out media-tech speak.
Old and New...it's a human thing. And human's have History and Memory. So will the young ones as they 'age'? What was it that Orwell said about 'history'?
