Placement: I've always had a f'd up setup

...in my family room, semi corner load for the fronts, always meant to move it into the front living room...just to lazy. Last week, I almost moved on some LS90s to replace the 1Cs as my fronts, planning to setup a 2 channel in the proposed room. Well I didn't, but today, I thought what the heck let's check out the 1Cs in the other room.

I pulled apart my rig, placed the 1Cs on the 18' wall, about 4' from the corners, moved some furniture, moved in the TFM 45, the Luxman TP 114 and an old Toshiba DVD player that wasn't in use(mistake) into the new rig. I soon tore out my Oppo 83SE to use as the source...moved in the easy chair to the sweet spot and away I went.

OK, the room has a bit of hollow sound and the midrange sounds a bit throaty, but man, this is the way to listen to these speakers. I always knew I was compromising greatly with my family room setup, but the stage is now the entire 18' with not much wrap around (content dependent). They are about 3" from the back wall and the bass is hard hitting, fast and deep. My problems with the mids might be fixed with a few treatments, but it also could be the crossovers. That said, it's still an astounding experience.

I'm thinking I should go ahead and redo the HT asap. SDAs are great, but not necessary and certainly not in their optimum environment. I think I'll call the guy with the 90s and see if they are still available.

Combo rig:

Onkyo NR1007 pre-pro, Carver TFM 45(fronts), Carver TFM 35 (surrounds)
SDA 1C, CS400i, SDA 2B
PB13Ultra RO
BW Silvers
Oppo BDP-83SE

Placement is a huge part part of it. I've had a few experiences myself, now. I started with a pair of CRS+'s and moved to a pair of SDA-1's, but the CRS+'s weren't too happy being on the narrowest wall in a wide room (think: 50'x20').

You are hanging onto your 1C's, right?

Have you done the dynamat mod to the drivers and PR?
It made a huge improvement to the mids for my 2Bs.

No, just Mortite and tweets for both sets. I've been wanting to do the crossobers for awhile, just needed my business to steady up.

Totally improved room placement. Now you have to go back and listen to all your music again. The distance from the sidewalls and the distance from where you sit to me has to take priority. The distance from speakers to back wall is a personal preference. As I have said before, you do not a lot of distance between the speakers and too much takes away from the soundstage.
    Great job Ron.
