I finally listened to Pink Floyd DSM SACD tonight on the SRS2. I've been holding off until I had a feel for these speakers. I decided to take an evening off work, opened a bottle of adult beverage and warmed everything up since my gear likes about 40 minutes before it gives up the best sound.

I was disappointed. While the highs and lows were fairly accurate, the mids were very smeared and congested. Most notably during the complex passages of Us and Them. It sounded like a high school garage band playing:confused: This was pretty surprising since most music I've listened to was nicely presented.

I'm hoping the crossover upgrades I've planned will clean this up to a large extent. Even my wife mentioned it sounds terrible, and everything usually sounds good to her!

That's the key Gordo. Plus take into consideration that some versions of DSOTM arent' recorded well. I have quite a few copies on different formats and the ones that are recorded well are spectacular, the ones that aren't sound like ****. So don't despair, it'll come together.

I've never thought DSM was all that well recorded. Many use it as a demo and I never got why. I haven't heard the SACD version. But I have 3 redbook releases and when I'm in demo mood or just want to hear a well recorded and presented musical piece I never grab PF-DSM. I love it for the music, but not necessarily the recording.

    YMMV

This is true Brock. There are some poorly recorded issues of DSOTM out there but I can tell you the SACD and the several recordings I have on heavy vinyl sound spectacular. I have some redbook copies that sound like ****.

John I would play some of the copies of DSOTM any day to show off the capabilites of my rig as well as use it for critical listening.

You only need Imageshack's Forum code, you don't need the [/IMG] also.

Mike the forum program puts those codes in. Not every time though. It's weird. I always do a "preview post" to see if it does put them in and if it does, I delete them.

Yes. When you do an edit look at the beginning and the end codes you will notice that there are duplicates so just delete one in the beginning of the code and one on the end of the code and you should be good to go.

HAHA, Thanks, My wife calls that chair the "throne".The tv is not connected to anything but the cable. In this room it is either or but not both. Kinda like cats and dogs! When the stereo is on, the TV is off. These SRS2 sound very nice with good gear. I'm almost regretting buying the JL 112's.

Joe, I don't know if I'm making the pictures small or large at this point! I'm happy to be able to at least post a pic:o Perhaps I'll learn how to do it differently in the future! And yes, the voice does match the picture! A skinny underweight guy with a nasally midwest accent:eek:

Well that's not what you sounded like to me. BTW have you tried photobucket.com? Establish an account there and follow the directions. When you copy the imbed code and click the image button at the top of this text box and paste it in, the pictures come out full size on the page once you click "post reply."

Well, I finally have my DK Dreadnaught built and ready to try! Once I'm able to post pics, I show my slight mod to the box. I'm a believer in vibration control so, I replaced the rubber feet on the box with shock mounts. Been using the factory AI-1 since day one. But, I'm on the road for work and have to wait at least till the end of the month to try it out. I'll have to put the post in the back of the speaker when I get back. Going to use an AudioQuest Type 4 IC with bananas. Looking forward to this upgrade!!

I'm curious if anyone has ever tried sorbothane pads in place of feet on the SDAs to isolate vibration?

Gary, correct me if I'm wrong or someone else but I thought the whole purpose of tweaking the speaker cabinet was to firmly couple it to a concreate floor and to decouple it from a hanging wood floor. Sorbothane anything would have the exact opposite effect if you wanted to couple it to the floor.

I've used Sorbothane pods heavily throughout my system and sheets of it to line the plinth of my turntable and innerds of CDPs, amps, preamps, etc years ago and it did a great job of isolating the gear from the racks but on some pieces, and for the life of me I can remember which (i.e. amp, source, preamp etc), the Sorbothane made the piece of gear sound lifeless, muddy, and smeared depending on the music being played.

You ain't kiddin Bro. A small piece of Sorbothane has the deadening/damping ability as a much larger piece of lead. Great stuff! Only one real draw back is when using on gear or anything for that matter, it has a propensity to stain the finish and trust me it DON'T come off.

I have not tried Sorbothane but the speaks are on BDR Pits right now. They are some kind of carbon fiber and are very hard. Not sure how they work being to darn hard, but the results speak for themselves. I'm on a floating wood floor and the pits have made a BIG impact with both the SDA and the Spire's.

It would take a great deal of Sorbothane to support the weight of a large SDA.

I don't think it feasible to have Sorbothane at the four corners of a large SDA. It would take a huge pod or disc and it would probably get crushed so thin that the properties of the Sorbothane would be nullified.

If I was dead set on using Sorbothane for my big SDA's I would try to acquire a thick sheet of it or multiple thins sheets layered on top of each other to cover the entire underside of the base so as to dissipate the weight over the entire sheet.

There are Sorbothane composites that make the overall puck or pod stronger and able to support heavier weights but they tend to loose the dampening power that pure Sorbothane has.

I just don't see Sorbothane as a good damping product for heavy large SDAs. I've used Sorbothane pods under very heavy amps but after some time they needed to be swapped out with new ones due to the fact that over time they get crushed under the weight, become thinner and loose their damping properties.

Sorbothane is available in different densities from the manufacturer for up to several hundred if not thousands of pounds supported by 4 & 6 inch square discs. The maximum damping properties are matched to the weight capability of the specific piece & work best within that range.
