Drove up to Staten Island and met member Russ_L and purchased his 4 pristine Monitor 10's . All four are a 9.9 with just a mark or two on the cases and a fuzzy or two on the covers for the whole set of 4. Original stands for all in good condition with a few corner tears on the vinyl. I'll seek some advice on the best way to repair these to look new. Serial numbers all close together in the 50,000 range according to the Registration cards. All original speakers and tweeters.

see pics here: http://www.polkaudio.com/forums/showthread.php?t=78156&highlight=russ_l

Thanks Russ. I got them home, set them up and tried a pair at a time. They sound great!! Wow, I forgot how good these sound!

On the way home I stopped and picked up some vinyl from George Grand. Thanks George. Look forward to meeting (and buying) some more.

Newby- start out with a dumb story

Hi: First post of a long time music freak. I retired a few years ago and moved from a big house (with room for big speakers) to a very small house with no room. (NJ)
In a moment of stupid generosity I sold my perfect Monitor 10A speakers to a local kid for $35. Not sure if he knew what he got, but may by now.

Fast forward to now. I am finishing up my garage (hangout) in the backyard and plan to dig out my old Sony gx700es receiver, my B & O turntable and set up some sound in the garage. It is 30' X 50' with 12 foot ceilings, well insulated and will have a big screen TV, Air and heat.

Sooooo, I want to find some Monitor 10's (I loved those speakers) or something close, and dig out my old records (for you youngins, they're the big round ones) and hear some Skydog and Clapton through something other than earbuds again. Will 4 Monitor 10's do the trick, should I find something else? I'm partial to vintage stuff.

Thanks. Looks like a cool site!

    Joe

    Thanks guys. Couple of questions:

Are these considered Model 10's or Monitor 10"s?? I was just doing some research and there are both??

Please advise on any maintenance I may want to, or should, perform on these. I'm reading as much as I can on here and hearing about PM using JB Weld and other preventive care. Is this all something I should consider?

Also, any advise or experience with stand repairs? Has anyone found a source for the vinyl that covers the stands?? I'm a woodworker and considering making new stands from MDF a little denser than the oems, or maybe real wood.

It's been a while since I heard decent speakers. Wow.

    Thanks, Joe

Those look like early Monitor 10A's, with Peerless tweeters.

The dual fuses are an indicator that they're probably earlier production examples, because they went to a single fuse system partway through the production run.

One thing you should do, is replace the stock gaskets with rope caulk. I recently did this to mine, and it's made a tremendous difference.

There's some info about it in this thread...scroll down to post #171...

I just dug out the literature on my 10B's. It says:

Monitor Reference Series Loudspeakers - Monitor 10B

    200W/channel...6ohms...92dB...20-20kHz

IIRC, i bought mine in '87...for something like $380/each.

i've never done a thing to mine other than to make sure I didn't over/underdrive them. Looked them over the other day, still not single scratch or mark on either to be found and the rubber/surrounds all seem pliable and like new. it was just a well designed, well built speaker. darn, i'm getting all misty eyed... :)
    Thanks!

Model 10 or Monitor 10 means the same loudspeaker. I would refer to them as a Monitor 10.

You can find the vinyl at Parts Express. I'd make some higher quality stands with spikes. You can find spikes at PE as well.

Thanks for the answers and links. guys. I think I'm going to work on one set of stands and mortite etc, while I listen to the other pair! Yes, George is a very cool guy, and a great person, I can tell already.

Someday when I get this garage done...............working on finishing up the insulation and running electric, then some walls.... still going to the races two days a week. Never enough time.

They are technically Model 10's as that was the name of the first Monitor 10's. The nomenclature is not as widely used or known. But to me it actually designates these as being "more special". :D

AS far as the vinyl, depending on were they are de-laminating, if it is just the edge, I would just use black edge tape. But I also would like to see what your hardwood versions would look like.
    ENJOY.

Yes those are 10s not 10As They are 20,000 below mine in number and look the same. They have the Denmark made Peerless. 10As have the US made one and the cones do not have that cardboard stuff but there is some crossover. keith

So, I opened up one of the speakers today and found it full of white polyfill. Also the gaskets are a thin black butyl-like material, not paper, and they look perfect. Does that sound right?

    Nice score

    Do Not stack them

Get some Mortite or other rope type caulk and use that in place of the gaskets for all drivers. See this thread. It makes a big difference. Matt Polk suggested this tweak as they originally used "rope caulk" instead of gaskets in the very early days.

I won't stack em, in fact 2 seems to be more than enough right now, so the other two are just going to be stored for future use, after some preventive care.

So, just to be clear, I should "mortite" even though these black rubber gaskets look perfect, right?

Thanks to everyone for the advise!!

Perhaps a better pic of the gasket. If it's in good shape keep it and try Mortite and see which you like better. Later Models use a paper thin gasket that really deteriorates after awhile.

Need to have a better pic of the gasket.

Congrats on the great aquisition! I also have 2 pair of Monitor 10's and would never give up both pair. I will have at least one pair until the day I die. I did, for a few weeks have both pair set up side by side. I thought it sounded pretty darn sweet. I tried to tilt,toe-in, etc... each pair so that they kind of hit the ears in same spot. You at least need to do it once....just 'cuz you can.

Congrats, just got a set of Perrless Monitor 10A's about a month ago, and I love em. Can't wait to get some real power to them and I may have an inside track on a set of Monitor 7 stands that are pretty much the same as the Monitor 10 stands (I think) so I will be rollin then.

I've actually found those old gaskets, as long as they are not torn, to be pretty good but I still used a speaker sealer on all the MWs.

Hi Joe- glad the quadruplets made it home safely from the half way point. And I see you are enjoying them too.

A word about naming. Yesterday, while working in the basement, I came across the Instruction Manual for the 10s I purchased new in 1981 (the ones our first born took to college in 1990 - the ones that never came back).

They had the Peerless tweets, but just one fuse (on the tweeter). The Instruction Manual calls the speakers "Model 10 Studio Monitor System". So both names seem to apply, Model and Monitor.

E-mail or PM your address to me and I'll send you the Manual. It's in great shape too.:)

    Enjoy,

    Russ

PS- I over analyzed the Silverline Sonata IIIs that were for sale on Audiogon. I made my offer yesterday but they were gone. He who hesitates ........:(
