Wasnt there another SACD of this album that came out a few years back? I seem to remember it coming out along with Tommy but maybe I'm mistaken. If there is another SACD version, I'd be interested to hear how the two would compare??

No other Who's Next on SACD. There was My Generation and Tommy.

Interesting article on SHM, SACD, and the Who's Next SHM-SACD in particular below. I'd be interested in what others on here think about it. Maybe "psychology" does play a part in the perception of a CD's sound quality but I can say at least that to my mind, this new version of Who's Next is the definitive version. On my second spin now and I'll be damned if it doesnt sound better than the first time around!

    From the blog,
The SHM thing I suspect is nonsense; if CDs and SACDs made with ordinary material did not work properly, we would have noticed it years ago. The advantages of SACD are doubtful too, certainly for stereo, because the limitations of human hearing make the extended frequency response pointless.

Not only doesn't he understand what the SHM material does, he's completely clueless about the benefits of SACD.

The bottom line for me is, "how does it sound to you"? For me, this version sounds superior to my other copy. My wife was responsible for putting in each version of the album and 10 out of 10 times I easily picked out the SHM-SACD easily. I guess its "to each his/her own tastes". To my tastes, this one rocks!!

Pretty cool sounding album. Hearing things I had never noticed before. There is some noise in the background during the final synth section of Wont Get Fooled Again, just before the drums come back in...it's neat to hear "imperfections" like that and gives the recording a real life like feeling. You can really crank this album with zero distortion. The link I posted above states that Wont Get Fooled Again was recorded louder than the rest of the album but damn if I can hear it. Daltrey's scream at the end of the track has always been epic but on this SACD it's downright earth-shattering!!

Glad to hear you're enjoying it. It's a revelation to me after hearing that album for so many years. I have the SHM-SACD of WHo's Next as well, but I think Aja is the better of the two. My own tastes I guess....

Dangit... nothing I really want there. I did receive my "Pretenders II" MoFi SACD yesterday and gave it a spin last night. Quite an improvement over the original CD release. God I love that disc.

I pre-ordered the SRV "Texas Flood" SACD as well.

Has anybody heard the SHM version of Allman Bros @ Filmore East? I see it was asked earlier but unless I missed it I didn't see any replies.

Just got my latest shipment of SHM-SACD's in from Japan. The gear is warmed up, the ear wax is cleaned out and I'm ready for some great tunes.

How did you know that WOF would be the first up....lol

Only listened once and as with the other SHM-SACD's I expect the sound to improve after further plays. That said, it's good. The drums and cymbals are very good, natural if you will. Heck, it's all good with one exception, there is a lack of deep bass. We'll see about that later.

I listened to Gaucho is well. I have to say it is amazing how the same source can end up sounding so different. In comparision, the 2003 SACD sounds shouty (not a word) and harsh, but once again the 2010 version lacks the deep bass punch that the 2003 version has. Hopefully that will improve with further plays. The 2010 version is, without a doubt, more natural sounding otherwise.

Jess, I'm confused. When you say "further plays" are you inferring that the disc's sound will improve with time or that you need to adjust something or you need to get used to the sound?

Thanks for the post OP. I will definitely be ordering from them soon. Love the SACDs. Only have a few now, but plan on buying as many as I can.

    What audiophile doesn't love SACDs?

I love vinyl as well, but the SACDs also have the convenience factor :)!
