So, what do folks think of Who's Next?

I gave this another listen last night and I'm a bit underwhelmed - the mix seems a bit flat - not as much depth or dynamics (esp. on Moon's drumming) as I expected.

    Aja is breathtaking.

    Paranoid is pretty darn good.

Who's Next is quiet and clean, but seems a tad flat on my rig.

Well, after reading all of the glowing reviews about the Aja SHM-SACD, I bit the bullet and ordered it from CdJapan. After spending $51 on the CD< I really didnt want to spend a lot on shipping so a went for the method that might take up to 8 weeks. Ah, but what fun it will be to anticipate the arrival! Hopefully it'll get hear in the best case scenario of 4-12 days (optimistic I know). After listening to my DVD-A version of Gaucho, this SACD has a lot to live up to. My Denon DVD-2900 is my main music platform. I had been listening to a lot of music on my PS3 and had a real awakening when I went back to the Denon. No contest; the Denon blows it away every time. Going to wait for a night when the wife is out and really crank this album up when it arrives. More detailed reviews from those who already have it would be appreciated!

Tell ya the truth Mike, nothing in the 4th group excites me. I wanted Traffic, but not that one. I did see that Traffic and Rod are listed as pre order-sold out on CDJapan.

I went for the el cheapo shipping rate too and it only took 2-3 weeks for delivery. Not bad.

Gotta agree Jesse. I was gonna put the Traffic disc on the back burner, but can't really swing it right now. It's the only Traffic disc I don't own. I hope the next group is better.

Edit: CDbanq is still taking pre-orders for "John".

I will likely get the GBYBR, certainly an album fundamental to a collection, I have the SACD already and its SQ is excellent. The Krall I have as well, she has some great musicians around her and of course Jazz is ultimate music (for me) when done well. But I will likely wait and not preorder the Krall.

Free holds potential I guess their biggest hit ever was Allright Now....not sure though on this one, if someone gets it would be interested in their thouhts.

Its great to see the Stewart sell out like that, lets them know the potential of SACD markets, Mobile Fidelity may take note, their has certainly been some nice rock releases, I would like to see some of todays artists who play music release SACD, Dave Matthews, some more Cowboy Junkies, Dada and so on.

Anyway, thanks Danny for the updates.

Is this the Barleycorn with the bonus tracks thrown in the middle of it? I'll definately pass if that's the case. They did not have a track listing on the CDJapan web site. I would probably get it if it's the original running order with the bonus tracks at the end though.

HMV Japan is listing the below titles for release on SHM-SACD in November 2010....

    Diana Krall
The Girl In The Other Room
    The Love of Love
When I Look in Your Eyes

    Elton John
    Goodbye Yellow Brick Road

    Rod Stewart
    Gasoline Alley

    Free
    Fire and Water

    Fairport Convention
    Liege & Lief

    Traffic
    John Barlaycorn Must Die

I might be interested in Rod Stewarts "Gasoline Alley" as I only have that on LP and it is a good but not a pristine copy. It is Rod's second best album behind "Every Picture Tells a Story" and quite good. I already have GYBR on SACD so I'll pass. Krall I can take or leave (like the videos) so I won't spend for those. Free is a maybe and I have very nice vinyl copy of "John Barleycorn Must Die". If I can't pick up the Stewart, I'll probably pass on them all.

Greg, I seriously doubt you'll find any of that BS bonus track stuff on any SHM-SACD release.

Got an email from CDJapan on Wednesday that they shipped my Aja SACD!!! Now the fun of anticipation begins! I got the standard air mail so I have no idea how long it could take. The website said it could take up to 8 weeks but I'm hoping thats not the case! Best case scenario looks like 5-12 days so I'll hope for that. Meanwhile, my Denon 2900 will be anxiously awaiting its arrival! I sure hope the SACD version of this album lives up to my sonic expectations!

Just got done with my first run-through of my Aja SHM-SACD and all I can say is wow...just WOW! If its true that SHM's have a "burn in" period then it might become too much to take. An A/B comparison of the title track with my original MCA CD from the 1980's was an unfair fight. The SACD was louder without being obnoxious and the amount of detail was just fantastic. I could almost smell Steve Gadd's cymbals....thats the only way I know how to describe it. The woodblocks, the triangle...all the little percussion elements are clearly defined and there is not a hint of tape hiss from a recording done in 1977. Plus, the packaging...oh man, the packaging! It reminds me of what getting a new LP in the 70's was like. The cardboard they use to house the CD is some sturdy stuff. Plus the paper sleeve that the CD comes in with the SHM and SACD logo's on it is pretty cool as well. AND the plastic protector has both logos as well (as has been mentioned before in this thread...sorry, I'm just very excited right now!). This SACD takes me back to the days when I was a kid and was first in line to buy the new Rush albums when they would come out (I was first in line at the record store the day Hemispheres came out in 1978...even though I was only 9 at the time). Anyway, I was wanting to do a detailed A/B with my new SHM-CD of Moving Pictures, but I might just sit back and listen to this SACD all night and wait to see if it gets any better! Every bit of this album just screams "collectors item" and it was WELL WORTH the money I paid for it. I wish more American companies paid this kind of attention to detail. HELL YES!!!

After a short playing of my new SHM-CD of Moving Pictures, I had to come back to my Aja SHM-SACD. If anything, it sounds even better than the first time around! Burn in period? My own ears playing tricks on me? Whatever it is, I'd have to say that this is the best sounding SACD I own. Now, on my system, I think DVD-A's are the high point in terms of sound quality, but this SACD is a close second to anything other high res discs I own. In fact, my favorite SACD is Aja (now!) and my favorite DVD-A is Gaucho! I guess Steely Dan were (are) just masters of producing sonically stunning pieces of work. I will continue to play this album many times over the coming weeks and I'm sure I'll have more to report. At any rate, the more I listen to this SACD, the "less worse" I feel about spending $60 on it! Part of me wishes I had bought 2 copies so I could keep one sealed as a real collectors item and have the other one to play. Given the joy I've gotten so far from this SHM-SACD, I cannot WAIT till the SHM-SACD of Who's Next I just ordered to get here!

Well, without a doubt the AJA SHM SACD does sound better after a few plays. I put it on last night and had it on repeat at low volumes then took it out this afternoon and gave it a listen. Much improved from my first 2 listens, which I didnt think was even possible. Before this SACD, I thought DVD-A was the best sounding format on my system. Well, not anymore!

Doing an A/B comparison of Who's Next original MCA CD and the new SHM-SACD. So far, absolutely no contest. The SACD blows the other way in every possible category. The soundstage, dynamics, the low end and drums are all more detailed and warm. I think there was some serious loudness added to the original MCA CD that I have (from 1984). I do like that version if, for no other reason, than that is the only version I've ever had. However, since this is my first spin of the SHM-SACD and so far in my experience, the SHM CD's get better with each play, I expect the differences between the two versions to get larger with each spin of the SACD. Those Japanese sure know something about high quality audio releases!
