It's all Carbon Motors. No one else is involved. The drivetrain might be sourced from another company with higher production capabilities but the car itself is all Carbon Motors. It's been floating around the Intarwebs for a couple years now.
It's a snazzy ride but expensive. Ford, GM and Chysler are all still offering cheaper alternatives. Ford' Crown Vic is out this year which is a shame because that is a solid, reliable platform that can take abuse. They switched to a Taurus base for the new police vehicle. It should be just as durable but time will tell I suppose. It's better than the GM options at least. But the Dodge Charger is making headway in the market. Mainly because of power. Alot of police are saying it's fragile though and hard to get in and out of. That's probably why not many state departments have picked it up preferring to stay with the CV or converted SUVs.Expert Moron Extraordinaire

I wonder how much cheaper? I've seen the Carbon on the internet and I think it's a great idea.
Btw, anyone know if any law enforcement agencies out there still use the old-school Camaro Z28 (not the current version)? I just noticed that California Highway Patrol (CHP) is still using theirs near where I live. -

I'm going to have to dig a bit more to find the prices when I have more time. IIRC though, the Carbon Motors rig is over $40K. Ford's Taurus based rig 10-12K less and GM's Zeta platform based rig is almost $20K cheaper. But, the Ford and Carbon Motors rigs are better appointed with more equipment options and better ergonomics and layouts than GM's Caprice Police Patrol Vehicle.
Chrysler is supposed to be updating the Charger to compete but I haven't seen any press releases other than the typical "Yeah...we're gonna do it." BS from Chrysler.
I think that Ford is going to sell way more Taurus sedans to taxi fleets than cop departments.
Oh, one thing about the Ford rig, since it's based on the same platform as the Taurus, Ford is going to...or at least planning to release a "utility" version based on the Flex, the box crossover that replaces the Taurus X. I honestly think that is a better option than the hulking SUV's.Expert Moron Extraordinaire

you still see them around as chase vehicles on highways (only place those things would be usefule, as they dont come close to a full functional cop car. they pursue, just like the 5.0 stangs did as well.
obviously they have been phasing out over time, I saw a Z28 in NY state on the throughway about 3 yrs ago, was the last one i saw in person but am sure they still got some in the midwest to west......parts for them are cheap and abundantLiving Room 2 Channel -

Thanks for the info, Jstas!
I'm asking because I've heard police offiers have complained about accessibility issues about getting in and out of police cars that were modified production sedans. I remember seeing a TV interview in which San Francisco Police officers were raving about how easy to get in and out of their (then new) Chevy SUV police "cars" with their night sticks. Therefore, I'd imagine a purpose build police car, like the Carbon, would be better suited for police duties and potentially a lifesaver.
Of course, I'm coming into this conversation being a complete "civilian" and probably have no idea what I am babbling about. -

I wonder if law enforcement agencies will use the new Mustang, Camaro, or Cahllenger for police duties? Perhaps in better economic times? -
Speaking from experience, hulking SUV's do come in handy at times, but it would be silly to have a fleet of them.
Oh, I don't disagree but at the same time, I see NJ State Poopers rocketing down I295 and the Turnpike in gigantic Chebbie Tahoes that I really don't think were intended as pursuit vehicles. The Flex based "utility" patrol vehicle would be much better suited to that purpose or as a K-9 unit.
There are advantages to big SUV's. Foul-weather, pushing crippled vehicles out of the way and just carrying tons of crap. But most Staties could get away with a Flex and be much more efficient with them for carrying tons of crap.
Then again, the Flex and Taurus will be offered in AWD form as well so the foul-weather aspect would be covered there as well.Expert Moron Extraordinaire

Yes, that is a large complaint and why many officers are lamenting the demise of the CV. It's also one of the criticisms of the Charger. But Ford kept the CV going this long so that they could get the Taurus mules ready and out to be tested in Michigan. The Carbon Motors rig already addresses those problems as well as many others. Ford took many of teh criticisms and complaints of the CV and applied them to the Taurus. Granted, the Taurus isn't as purpose built as the Carbon it does have many of teh same ergonomic features including seats that make room for equipment belts as well as special seatbelts for the same purpose.Rear seat entry and egress is supposedly better in the Taurus than all but the Carbon Motors rig and is better than the outgoing CV.I wonder if law enforcement agencies will use the new Mustang, Camaro, or Cahllenger for police duties? I do believe that there is already a pursuit package for the Mustang. IIRC, it is done on special order by Roush. It doesn't make it any hotter, just adds heavy duty and super duty parts to make it more durable.Expert Moron Extraordinaire

From a few of my Cop friends, they say the new Charger is a lot smaller inside than the Crown Vic, and thus not a partner car. Nice car, but less practical.
The Carbon does look like a great car, but seeing the state of most of our local governments, a more expensive vehicle is not going to be the first choice on budgets; no matter how much better it is.Btw, anyone know if any law enforcement agencies out there still use the old-school Camaro Z28 (not the current version)?
